Anti-Flair Math: (Swirls + Stripes + Splashes) = Yawn

in #photography9 years ago (edited)

When it comes to creative flair and paint schemes, a large part of the Recreational Vehicle (RV) industry is stuck in a fugly funk.

While on the long drive Northbound on I-95 back to New Jersey from a week-long vacation in North Carolina, I lost count of how many RVs I passed ... let's just say it's 100s of them.

To change the subject for a moment, do you remember when you were a kid and your parents would give you a nickel for every red car you spotted? I guess, anything for a little peace and quiet on the trip 😊

Anyways, what most of these RVs have in common is an outdated, cliched, tired, and boring look, due to (IMHO) a paint scheme that employs mostly white, beige, and brown backgrounds gussied up with unattractive swirls, stripes, and/or color splashes.

For some reason, the phrase "putting lipstick on a pig" comes to mind.

I'm not exactly sure what these swirl marks are trying to convey?

  • Is it trying to convince me that RVs are extremely aerodynamic and slice through the wind like a hot knife through butter?

  • Or is it that RVs are like Superman - faster that a speeding bullet?

For my money, I'd opt for ditching the gaudy swirls, stripes and splashes for just about anything else. Heck, I much prefer the simple, yet sleek, look of the Airstream.

So, what do you think, is it time for the RV industry to break out of their funk and come up with a fresh new look, or are you a swirl, stripe, and splash fan?

Below are a few of the RV images I captured through a dirty windshield on the drive home from NC yesterday. But trust me, 90+% of the RVs have a similar paint scheme!

If you don't believe me, just take a browse through East Coast RV's inventory where swirls, stripes, and color splashes abound.

I bet they look much more exciting when they're parked on a gravel pad 4' from their nearest neighbors to their left, right and behind them.

Think of it, an entire "campground" of swirled beasts, their air conditioners resonating as one, like a giant Cicada hatch.

Ah, nature.

Haha, nice comment @theblindsquirl!!!

I am almost literally surrounded by "campgrounds" just like hat.

One to the North about 12 miles and another 5 miles to the South. They can stand in their doorways and spit on the RV next to them. And they're booked solid from now through September.

Oh yeah, and there are 2 or 3 more privately owned campgrounds in a 10 mile radius. They've got a little more space, but they're also more expensive.

I think the graphics may be doing a pretty good job representing the people inside them.

LOVE the cicada hatch analogy. And "ah nature" ahhh!! hahahaha

Very lovely post friend.

Literally laughed out loud. 100% agree these are some fugly fashion statements they've got on them vehicles. And actually, the airstream looks pretty retro-cool, so if i were on the market for an RV (which I'm not), I'd go for the classic, instead of the wanna-appear-sleek-but actually-hideous modern versions. Thanks for the chuckle!!!

that RV looks cool in design

What a fun photo-shoot. Thanks for putting it out. I think I prefer the good old fashioned silver Airstream. But then again, I couldn't AFFORD one, so maybe painting a huge mural on the side of a mobile box would be best. Mural of the woods.
