The butt hurt or the troll/ or maybe the Oatmeal.

Why do people argue. No I don't mean the fruitless practice taught in college called debate. I mean why do people discuss things emotionally. You know what I mean. You are having a discussion and the whole idea is to find something of value. What happens. Well you point something out that the other person apparently doesn't like and the next thing you know you're talking about something that really has nothing to do with the point of the post. There is at least two conditions that could be the problem. Yeah I know there usually can be a lot more than just two, but in this case I am only going to discuss too.

  1. The other person got butt hurt because what you said was like pushing their buttons or pulling their chains. This is the one that we really don't like being caught out on either. Instead of being shocked into better behavior I just get worse over time. That has actually changed for me now, because of the Oatmeal
  2. The other persons purpose was not to discuss the point of the discussion in the first place. Trolling or maybe trying to take up your time thinking wasting your time is funny or some such. Usually this just tells me how much they value their own time.

I totally get number 1. It happens to me. Of course I am not perfect. Of course I am as susceptible as any human being is to getting butt hurt over something said too close to home.

However I do make it a practice to try to not get butt hurt. I also try extremely hard not to continue in the behavior when I notice I am doing it. Mostly I am successful and I have noticed it happens less than before I started making this effort.

I am however going to share why I started making this effort. I came across a really good explanation as to what is happening in number 1 at least. It is called the oatmeal. Below is the link I saved so I could share it with my fellow steemians.

The Oatmeal

I hope we are all on the same page now. I know it was an eye opener for me anyways. The thing about this is that it applied to me a lot more than I wanted it to and still does. The cool thing I have noticed however is that I am getting better. Just a little bit everyday.

How about you?
