Women club Engagement Contest | Personal development and what I do by @concord-leo
PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT
Personal development is a lifelong process. It is a way for people to assess their skills and qualities, consider their aims in life and set goals in order to realize and maximize their potential. It allows you to be proactive and take charge of your actions. You may not always reach your objective but you lead a more fulfilling life because your purpose is defined. To get started with personal development, you should create a plan with actionable steps.
For someone to remain relevant in his or her field there is need for personal development. There is need to move up the ladder of career, social life and every other aspect of life then the answer is personal development. When personal development is ignored, someone cannot make any impact in this life. The world is dynamic because everything is changing everyday and there is need to run with the pace of advancement the world is running with in order to be fit for the modern day world. To achieve this, then personal development is the key.
As an individual, I love to work on my life base on the trend the world is going with in technology, academics, social, fashion etc. I want to keep myself updated, informed and well equipped for the modern day world. To meet up with these trends, I read voraciously, I watch youtube videos, I attend academic seminars and I do a number of courses online to keep myself relevant in my career field. In this article I will put down the activities I do for my personal development.
READING
Reading is one of my hobbies. I came to realize that reading enlarges the scope of an individual and it helps to improve vocabulary. I have a lot of books I read ranging from spiritual, inspirational, educational etc. Reading books has helped to model my life.
Every year I set a target of reading at least 12 books aside my course work books. I take time to search for books and their review then I order them on Amazon. I love to read spiritual books authored by jimmy swaggart, Roberts Liardon, David Yonggi Cho, Dr. Robert Schuller etc.
A peep into few of my books
ATTENDING ACADEMIC CONFERENCES
I am a Mathematician and a Data Scientist. Right from the onset I have determined to be a seasoned mathematician and to make impact in my field of study. To achieve this, I know I have to work hard on my personal development. I am eager to know the trending and relevant topics in mathematics and read to update myself. I attend academic seminars and conferences.
Attending conferences, summer internships and seminars helps me in the following ways:
Presented a paper in an international conference
Attended a national conference and presented a paper
LEARNING NEW SKILLS ON YOUTUBE AND GOOGLE
Google and Youtube is a very helpful tool for personal development. Many people had learnt different skills through by using youtube, google and other platforms online. I have advanced in my field of study and learnt software skills using youtbue.
In 2015 I started to learn how to analyze data using SPSS and Excel. I never had any physical class, I learnt the skills online using youtube. With these software skills I learnt online, I was able to do my undergraduate project.
Working on a project using software skills
I also went ahead to learn R and python in 2018. These software skills have really helped me in my field of study. I have been able to present two papers in international conferences, thanks to these skills.
RECOMMENDATIONS
I will recommend we cultivate the habit of reading books. This will help reshape and remold our thinking and behavior and help us to be aware of the current trend in the society.
Be very serious minded individual in all endeavors. In your chosen career, build yourself and try to update when the need arises. Attend seminars, conferences, carnivals etc to build up your reputation.
Finally, try to learn a skill.
