My opinion about the poverty and wealth of the countries, based on a very interesting book.
Here is a review of his first chapter: called So close and yet so far away.
In this chapter we talk about so close and, however, so different in which the cities are located, they focus on the city of Nogales that is divided in two. One is in the North, Arizona, the United States, and the other in the South, Sonora, Mexico. Physically separated by a fence and with the same population, culture, climate and geographical situation, I do not see any difference, but they live lives of such different qualities, differences in income, as their institutions are different. In Arizona Most teens go to high school and most adults have high school. Despite all the controversy generated by the shortcomings of the health system in the United States, the population is relatively healthy, and has a high life expectancy according to world criteria. They have public services and can carry out their daily activities without fearing for their lives or safety and do not have a constant fear of theft, expropriation or other things that could endanger investments in their businesses and homes. Democracy is something natural for them, but what happens in the South (Sonora) there life is a bit different. Most adults do not have a high school diploma and many teenagers do not go to high school. Mothers worry about the high rates of infant mortality. Public health conditions are poor, they do not have access to many public services. There is a lot of crime and opening a business is a dangerous activity. Besides running the risk of being robbed, they live daily with the corruption and ineptitude of politicians. But why does this happen? If they are so close because there are different income opportunities, government corruption, their inability to offer public services and the lack of equal opportunities in their country.
It focuses on the joint evolution of political and economic institutions, as well as their good and bad leaders of political and economic behavior and the changes of course brought about by historical events at critical moments such as those we live in, in one of the most continents unequal world and that undermined much of its potential.
Throughout the Spanish colonial world in America, similar institutions and social structures appeared. After an initial phase of greed and looting of gold and silver, the Spaniards were dedicated to exploiting the indigenous peoples expropriating their land, forcing them to work, offering low wages despite the fact that these institutions generated a lot of wealth for the Spanish Crown and rich to the conquerors and their descendants.
Nowadays, governments do not focus adequately on favoring the growth of countries with adequate policies; It has always been a greed for the exploitation of natural and mineral resources that favor the growth of a country, but that fail when these institutions fail to adapt to changing times. Government corruption, its inability to offer public services and the lack of equal opportunities in its country. In every moment and place, powerful people always try to take control of the government, undermining social progress in favor of their own greed.
In this issue we can observe certain nefarious regimes fall into a vicious spiral that think that the economic destiny of a country is predetermined by the geographical situation or the cultural legacy of our ancestors, are enough to reveal why some countries are successful and others are not. Not even that their leaders do not know what to do to produce wealth, which determines whether a country is rich or poor depends on the Institutions, politics, economy and respect for private property and that it has an authentic Rule of Law with a plural and open political system, with competition among candidates to occupy political positions.
