AFRICAN ART!!!

in #art7 years ago

Hey everyone, I am quiet an art lover of all shapes forms and sizes, from paintings to sculptures. One thing that I have certainly learnt over the last few months is what an alarming amount of talented African Artists we have in this country.

Here we have custom carved coasters made from ironwood which is exceptionally hard, it almost doesn't feel like wood as it is hard and very dense. I can only imagine what a mission it must be to carve, these chaps have real talent..

Iron wood as per wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ironwood

These street vendors I do feel rather sorry for as they are trying to make a living selling their art on the side of the road but luckily for them Hartbeespoort has a lot of money and really is a tourist hot spot.

Here he is holding not only coasters and pots all carved out of ironwood but an ashtray as well..

This chap was posing with a lovely smile and his buck sculpture which he was selling for R1000 around $90 which really is for nothing given all the work that goes into these amazing creations

I'm an avid collector of African art but more the tribal kind as opposed to the commercial ones. I've been collecting for around 10 years if I'm not mistaken. Haven't bought a piece in a while though. With that being said it does take some talent carving these pieces. Kuddo's for showing the locals some support :)

Thanks my brother.. ye my Grand father was a famous writer and philanthropist . I guess I am a chip off the old block, so no surprises where I get my passion from. Check his books out here..
