A Good week for Sri Lankan Sports | The World of Sports

Hello, fellow Sports Enthusiasts,

Sri Lankan people are very fascinating and have a great taste towards Sports. But it's not a secret that we are still way behind in making a mark at the top levels in many Sports. In Cricket we have already dominated the world stage many times. Eventhough there has been a considerable downfall in recent years, we are still a proud Cricket nation.

We also have 2 Olympic medals, 5 Paralympic medals, and a few more highest-level wins. So, for us, at least a small win in all the other sports is a blessing. So, during the past two weeks, we had some happy moments as fans.

2024 Summer Paralympics

Samitha Dulan

• Just after the 2024 Summer Olympics, the Paralympics started in Paris, France, from 28 August to 8 September 2024. The Sri Lankan team consisted of 8 athletes mainly for athletics.

Sri Lanka’s Samitha Dulan competed in the Men’s Javelin Throw F64 event, under the F44 category. He secured the silver medal in the event with a throw of 67.03 meters. It's a world record in the F44 category. He is a Corporal of the Sri Lanka Army and at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games, he won the bronze medal as well.

AFC Asian Cup qualifiers (Football)

• Actually in the world rankings right now we are at 205th position out of 210 countries. 2027 AFC Asian Cup qualifying matches are going on these days, and I know Sri Lanka has a very low chance of moving forward. Anyway, the qualifying playoff against Cambodia was won by penalties.

Cambodia ranks 180th and the first leg was drawn without goals on September 5. Eventhough the second leg was at Cambodia Sri Lanka took control early. In the 37th minute, Oliver Kelaart scored the first goal for Sri Lanka, but Nhean Sosidan leveled it in the second half. As the match advanced to the extra time, Sos Suhana of Cambodia took charge in the 98th minute. The hopes were almost gone when Claudio Kammerknecht leveled the match in the 2nd minute of stoppage time. Sri Lankan captain, Sujan Perera was the hero saving two penalties as 4-2. With that win, we move forward to the third round of the Asian Cup qualifiers.

Pathum Nisanka

• Eventhough we lost the series 2-1, it was a great comeback from the boys in difficult conditions in the third match. It's our 4th win on English soil and the first one in the bazzball era. Mainly, England was a bit underrating our potential and more on the careless side.

England was at 221/3 at the end of the first day, with every strong condition. But our pacers came back well, restricting them to 325 runs. Even after a collapse from the top order, Kamindu and Dhananjaya carried us well up to 263 runs. Even with a 62-run first-innings lead, Sri Lankan pacers magically turned the tide towards us ending England for 156/10. The target was 219 runs and any Asian team hasn't been successful in achieving that in English soil. Our start was good with Dimuth and Nissanka secured along with Century as well.

South Asian U20 Athletics Championship

• The South Asian U20 Athletics Championship is going on in India from 11–13 SEP 2024. As always, it was a pretty great first day for us.

• Merone Wijesinghe and Dineth Induwara won the gold and silver for Sri Lanka in Men's 100 Metres, and Shanella Senewirathna won the bronze in women's 100m.

• H.D.S Awishka won the gold in Men's 800 Metres and, Tharushi Abhisheka and Sansala Himashani won the gold and bronze in Women's 800m.

• Kashmika and Nethra Samadhi both won silver medals in Women's High Jump.

• In Men's Shot Put (6kg) Jayavi Ranhinda won the Bronze medal.

So, it was a great first day for us with 3 Gold medals, 3 silver, and 3 bronze medals.
