Steem engagement challenge-s7/w5|My way to stay balanced during the time of stress.
-Noam Shpancer, Ph.D.-
Well, mental health is very important in our lives just like the physical health. As mentioned in the above quote it's an ongoing process in our daily lives, that requires effort and dedication. So, it's necessary to give it the attention and importance it deserves.
When it comes to this, stress has become a common problem that ruins our mood. It's a mental and emotional reaction when we face a challenge. Nowadays in this competitive world, it's pretty easy to get caught in pressure situations and get overwhelmed. So, it's very important to take care of our mental health and balance our lives even in times of stress.
Thank you very much to our beloved Incredible India community for bringing up this matter for discussion in Steemit Engagement Challenge - Season 7. So, without further ado, I'll jump into my experiences and opinions on this matter.
Things I do to stay balanced in times of stress?
During University life and then working as a Civil Engineer always takes me under pressure and tough situations in my life. With so many responsibilities, and now with this economic crisis in Sri Lanka, this condition gets doubled. So, there are a few practices I follow to stay positive.
Be conscious about the source of stress - First I try to figure out how it happened. Whether from a work-related problem, relationships, physical health, etc. Then only I can figure out a solution and overcome it.
Take some break from the problem - Normally, before it bursts, I tried to get a small break from that work or focus on another matter. Because it's not good to take decisions and keep going no matter what continuously in a stressful situation for me.
Having a nap or a shower - Having a good sleep routine is really important to our body and mind. It refreshes the functions of the body. And also having a cold shower also help to cleanse my body and organize my thoughts. Haven't you
Engaging in one of my hobbies or relaxing activity - Well, this helps me to get relaxed big time. Whether it's a small walk/ reading book, watching a movie, listening to music, or now engaging in steemit.
Practice mindfulness and meditation - Mindfullness is the being present. Meditation helps a lot to stay calm and get relaxed. This is the best way to improve our mental health in the long run. Usually, I do meditation for around 5-10 minutes daily.
Setting realistic goals and priorities - I normally feel upset from shattering expectations. So, I try to limit that.
Getting connected with family and loved ones - Do I need to explain this point? I don't think so.
three main reasons behind our stress
Stress can be occurred due to various factors. I'll explain the most common sources according to my knowledge.
- Work Overload - Well, a considerable amount of our time, we spend in the workplace. So, it's necessary to have job satisfaction. But increasing responsibilities, heavy workload, long hours, lack of support from the management, poor work-life balance, and lesser pay make us exhausted. It leads to the depletion of both physical and mental health. It's no harm to say no in the workplace.
Comparing ourselves with the others - This is a very common thing including more or less in me as well. We usually try to compare ourselves with others and feel less secure. Others' achievements, possessions, win, or anything. It can lead to getting stressed. Just be happy for them and focus on your goals on your timeline.
Trying to be perfect in every aspect - It's the obsessive need of being perfect in everything. That's why we try to set unrealistic goals and compete with others. It can make pressure and stress. It's okay to be the best at everything, but we should understand that it's okay to fail and make mistakes.
Do you think now we should take this problem seriously? If so, then describe why?
Of course. As I said earlier Mental health is just as crucial as physical health, maybe even more. But to be honest, it's often underrated. Sometimes stress can be short-term, but if it becomes chronic serious health issues can happen. Heart diseases, anxiety, depression, etc. And also it can affect our daily lives as well. Decreasing productivity, relationship problems, negative thoughts, etc. It will generate more like a cycle.
Life is all about being happy and enjoying it. Isn't it? Stress can really ruin this. So, it's essential to take this matter seriously. Actually, we can't 100% avoid getting stressed. But as the contest topic suggests it's all about balancing it and improving our mental health. Because at the end of the day, what do we need? Be happy, isn't it?
