What is it like camping in the middle of the African bush?
Hi I'm Danny! I'm travelling around the world! Follow me.
I'm staying in one of the many wildlife conservancies that border the Maasai Mara national reserve in Kenya. For the next couple weeks I'm going to try and post each evening from The Naboisho Conservancy.
What is it like staying in the middle of the Maasai Mara?
I've spend a few days at the Base Camp Explorer Eagle View camp lodge. I've been working about 5 minutes away from eagle view, and as much as I love roughing it in the bush with just a tent and solar energy this place is a touch of luxury when you need a break. Most of us head over here at the weekends to refresh.
Eagle View unsurprisingly offers the best views in the whole conservancy. There is an incredible watering hole just below us and within eye shot where the animals come each day to drink. They are completely undisturbed and have no idea we are sat with our binoculars and cameras watching their every move.
Whilst here we're in thick tents on stilts that are covered in mosquito nets. We've got a view over the whole conservancy and these tents even have toilets. Each night we can hear the bush come alive - a few days ago a friend told me he heard a lion making a kill metres away.. he actually realised the lion was below the tent!
The Maasai are employed here to be guards and to run the place and as a customer staying here we can interact and learn from their knowledge of the bush, and hear their stories.
We spend hours listening to them talk in the evenings, watching the sunset all sat together around the fire pit.
On a typical afternoon I can sit for hours on the balcony, usually armed with a cold beer, looking out at the wildlife.
I saw these elephants in the distance miles and miles away and watched them walk all the way over to this watering hole before moving on! It was an incredible experience.
Stay tuned for more posts tomorrow!

PS The phrase "armed with a beer" is pretty awesome, it's like your defense against the potentially harsh climate and willdlife :P
