THE FACE OF GOD
Imagine living in the first century and being near where Jesus was and being able to touch him. You would have touched eternity.
A touch like that has no reference - while humanly you would be touching a human body at the same time it was the fullness of divinity. The same eternity dressed by a body limited to time and space.
But there is still more, He was also the last Adam, the very image of the invisible God. The Apostle Paul tells us that Christ is the visible image of the invisible God. This scenario presents us with the reality that it is impossible to understand Jesus by looking at the God of the Old Testament - first you have to look at Jesus and then you will understand the God of the Old Testament.
Jesus is the human face of God.
John 1:18 - Translation in current language (TLA)
"God made us know his laws through Moses, but through Jesus Christ he made us know love and truth. Nobody has ever seen God; but the only Son, who is closer to the Father, and who is God himself, has taught us what he is like. Thanks to what the Son of God is, we have received many blessings. "
What is God like?
At the wedding of Cana (John 2)
According to custom, the groom was responsible for providing the wine and food. When the wine was finished the social embarrassment began - this represented negligence on the part of the groom, which was not seen with good eyes.
The first miracle of Jesus in turning water into wine shows deep compassion. With a simple act the Lord removes the shame and disgrace of the groom, and makes the groom look like a hero because the wine he made from the water was better than the one they had already taken.
What a wonderful savior! - He's in the business of removing the shame caused by our negligence.
In the well of Jacob (John 4)
You find an abused, used and forgotten woman. She is a Samaritan with a bad reputation, divorced several times and living in sin. The Lord stops and breaks all social protocol, talking to her in public. As if this were not enough, he shares one of the deepest truths that a human can know. Once again he steps out of the limitations imposed by Jewish traditions and customs and reveals God's love and compassion.
For Jesus, people were more important than traditions.
It is possible to see God in the way Jesus manifested it. It is impossible to know God apart from Christ. In reality there is no God apart from Christ. He is Emmanuel - God with us.
What a glorious savior! The human face of God.
