I Had To Smog My 91 Chevy S10

Yes, it is tag time again. Well, it is tag time every year, but every other year I have to smog my vehicles. It is just another thing that has to be done for me to get the current tag for my vehicle. The majority of the states have to do emissions tests. Yes, and California is one of them.

Some of these smog test places have coupons that can help you pay less on your smog test. Well, I always go to a certain place for years now. They always advertise a coupon that helps people save about 10 dollars.

Well, with my coupon it is $40 out the door. I see other people with no coupon pay $50 out the door. Well, that is if the vehicle passes that is.

That is the thing you want to do the first time, cause by coming back you have to spend some kind of money to get the vehicle to run right so it will pass the smog test.

What I like to do to get a little bit of an edge is to put some premium gas into the gas tank sometime before the test. Well, I see articles that say that whether you use regular or premium it makes no difference.

Well in my mind it does make a difference. Well one time I brought in my 89 Nissan Sentra to a smog place and it didn't pass. So without doing anything else to the car, but fill it with premium gas I went to a different smog test station and that time it passed. So I will go with what works for me.

So I stopped by my gas station that I always go to and put in $20 worth of premium gas.

Then the next thing to get the edge with passing the smog test is to have the engine hot at testing. So after I left the gas station I went on the freeway to get the temperature of my engine really hot. Then I turned around after about 15 minutes or so then drove to the smog test station I always go to now days.

Let me also add that the last time I had to do a smog test I put in irithium spark plugs. They cost more, anywhere from 8 dollars to 14 dollars per plug depending on where you go to buy them.

I was told that race car drivers like to use irithium spark plugs. Also I was watching a video of Scotty Kilmer, the name of the video is The Best Spark Plugs in the World and Why.

In that video Scotty Kilmer said that these irithium spark plugs can last as long as 200,000 miles. Well, if those irithium spark plugs can last that long, then who cares how much those spark plugs cost?

Well, actually I care. So I really don't want to pay more than $8 per spark plug if I don't have to. So having those irithium spark plugs will give you another edge on that smog test.

Oh, yes, on this truck the last time this vehicle didn't pass. It usually passes, but my mechanic thought from the numbers on the test that the engine was too cold.

Well they changed the thermostat, but the bolt broke and it had to be redrilled. So what should have been an easy fix was not so easy, but it got the engine hot and it did pass back in 2017.

Well, that is good that I won't be changing the thermostat for a long time, God willing. That thermostat I put in then gives me an edge now.

Well, I brought my 91 Chevy S10 pickup to the smog place and gave them my paperwork and the coupon. So I sat down and waited for my vehicle to be tested.

In the meantime I took out some paper and pen and wrote down some notes. Well, those notes were for this blog here that I am writing now.

Before I knew it I heard, for the 91 Chevy. So I went up and the girl told me that my vehicle passed and that it will be $40. Well, that is good. I gave her 2 $20 bills. Exact change.

Now I don't have to test this vehicle again, until about this time in 2021, God willing.
