NATO is the cornerstone of collective security in Europe. The United States has a vital security interest in a peaceful Europe. We have had relative peace (aside from the Balkans) in Europe since 1945. Why would we want to risk trouble by upending NATO? Seems shortsighted in the extreme, but then again, it's not surprising. Any ass can kick down a barn, and Trump is certainly an ass.
I do think NATO has overexpanded over the years. That could be addressed, for sure. But that's not what Trump is up to.
Trump is playing with fire while possibly not even realizing it. He is loose cannon. It's up to the other two branches of the U.S. government to rein him in. I live in the region around the Baltic Sea. If Trump were to really be able to unilaterally pull the U.S. out of Nato, it would be unsettling to me as my home country is close to the Baltic Nato members and thus very close to a potential flashpoint if Putin were ever to be emboldened enough to go to war. I have a feeling that the GOP will pay a price for nominating this buffoon as its candidate. I doubt very much he would've been able to win as an independent.

Mutual defense is stupid. E.g. Modern day Israel and Nazi Germany. I'd ra-
ther not be involved in the defense of either of those regimes\ideologies.
I do disagree with Trump's position on foreign entanglements. We should
focus on the affairs of the U.S. and let countries handle their own affairs.

I should clarify, prearranged mutual defense is stupid. This kind of thing
should be considered on a case by case basis as situations arise. Else you
end up defending nations or regimes that do not merit support.
