Good day steemians,Today is yet another beautiful day and i presume that we are all doing well in our various work or stations.Today i will be writing on how to grow, harvest and process cassava into garri (CASSAVA FLAKES).The scientific name for cassava is MANIHOT ESCULENTA.
Cassava is a very essential supplier of calories in our diets,This crop is grown mainly by small farmers and it is consumed fried or boiled,So many food are processed out of cassava to show you how important this crop is but we will be looking at how to process garri(cassava flakes) which is the backbone of most Nigerians and Some other African countries, God bless all the people struggling out there today.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
SOIL TYPE: Cassava can be grown on any of the soils, however the most recommended soil for planting is SANDY CLAY LOAMS
RAINFALL: Cassava flourishes best when rainfall is high throughout the period of growth
SHADE:Cassava requires shade,it shouldn't be exposed to direct sunlight, therefore we can plant cassava in cocoa plantation so the cocoa would serve as shade
TEMPERATURE:The temperature should range between 25°c to 32°c.If the temperature is too much it can slow photosynthesis and the food produced
LAND PREPARATION
This are the variety ways we can prepare our land before planting cassava.
- Clear the land,removing bushes,grass and trees
- Plough, ridge and rotvate
- Form ridges 1.2m apart and 27-42cm high
- Plough along the contour to ensure proper drainage when it rains
HOW TO PLANT
Cassava sets are planted 45cm to 95cm on the ridge at a 50° Angle leaving 3-4 nodes above ground level. Cassava are mainly planted around may at the beginning of the raining period.
WEED MANAGEMENT
Herbicides should be used to control weeds for the first three months of growth (vegetative stage), then we implement the use of weeding with our hands after 3 months.
PEST AND DISEASE MANAGEMENT
Major crops are always affected by pesticides and diseases examples of pesticides are Thrips, mites and short fly, visit any insecticide outlet to buy the recommended insecticide for any pest and for unusual disease you can contact the ministry in charge of agriculture for ways to go about it.
HARVESTING PERIOD
Cassava matures around 8 to 12 months after planting, cutting plants around 2 weeks before harvesting should increase the tubers,Do not weed before harvesting.
PROCESSING CASSAVA INTO GARRI(CASSAVA FLAKES)STAGES:
- HARVEST CASSAVA
- PEEL OFF THE BACK OF THE CASSAVA
- CUT THE CASSAVA INTO SMALLER SIZES AND WASH
- TAKE THE CASSAVA TO A MILL FOR GROUNDING
- PACK THE CASSAVA INTO SACKS AND DRILL
- SIEVE OFF THE FINE CASSAVA POWDER
- PUT A REASONABLE QUANTITY INTO A FRYING PAN ON FIRE

Hi @dayjee
Its best to allow the grinded cassava tied strongly for 3-4 days to allow it ferment properly before further processing.
