VARIETY

It's possible for a diet to be balanced but still lack variety if the person eats the same foods day after day. It’s unrealistic to eat the same foods every day. People should vary their choices within each class of foods from day to day. Variety provides a way of ensuring you don’t get bored with the foods you eat. Variety also ensures you get different amounts of nutrients from different types of foods. Eating a varied diet means eating a variety of foods from each food groups daily in the recommended amounts.

Why variety?

  • Different foods in the same group contain arrays of nutrients. Among the fruits for example, strawberries are especially rich in vitamin C while bananas are rich in potassium.
  • No food is guaranteed entirely free of constituents that in excess, could be harmful!
  • Stability incase of an interruption from one source of food, varying your diet provides an opportunity to have plenty of other options making it easier to retain homeostasis.
  • Lower risk of food allergy and intolerance, eating the same food recurrently increases risk of developing intolerance or allergy evidenced by research conducted on Allergic Rhinitis Asthma.
  • Nutrition Synergy, diversifying your diet meets the requirements of nutrients that needs synergistic actions with other molecules in other to provide their beneficial effects.

Choose foods based on the different available diet planning guides, notable amongst which is the food guide pyramid.

Don't get stuck in an unending compromise with repetitive choices of food that could easily be substituted for an even better ones, as the adage goes, variety is the spice of life. Even if a person eats beans frequently, the person can choose red beans today, garbanzo beans tomorrow, and baked beans on the weekend.
