Light of my Life - Slow movie about the relationship between a father & daughter in a world shaken by a pandemic
Before deciding to watch this movie I had already read it was kind of slow so I was prepared for it since the beginning and after watching it I can say it pays off in the end. The first scene lasts for a few minutes and is just Casey Affleck's character and his daughter late at night in their bed while he is telling her a goodnight story.
It is great to see Casey Affleck being the main actor of a drama again, it has been several years after the Manchester by the Sea movie, which allowed him to win an Oscar for best actor. He does a good job in this film as well, portraying a father trying his best to protect his daughter under the most bizarre circumstances.
In this post-apocalyptic world, there has been a virus (different than the current chinese virus btw) that killed half of the human population. There are several flashbacks where we can see his wife and the daughter when she was a baby, we will also realize the pandemic began shortly after she was born.
There is a part of the movie where the girl discovers key information about the pandemic that allows her to understand why they are living like this. Other people live in the city and try to maintain some normality in their lives, but these 2 live hidden in the woods and with no contact with anyone else.
Since this is such a troubled world, there will be some hostility but the main topic of the movie, even more important than surviving in such difficult circumstances, is the relationship between a father and his daughter. There is a lot of dialogue between the 2, with the kid always asking a lot of questions and the father answering them in the best way he could. I really liked the way these 2 spoke with each other they seemed so authentic.
There aren't many actors in this movie, and most of the scenes are only with the 2 main ones. Thankfully, both of their performances were quite good.
If you can tolerate slow moments and enjoy dramas or post-apocalyptic scenarios you should definitely consider watching this film. In the end, I was happy I decided to watch it.
The best
- Amazing acting from Ben Affleck, he truly seemed like a loving and protective dad.
- Good dialogues between father and daughter.
The worst
- The fact it begins very slowly might cause some people to skip it.
