Introduction

Human societies always have a certain geographical area where rules are enforced, and people must comply with any legal obligation they have as citizens, we can even find cases where there are 2 different nations with complete different laws, resulting in very different lives for people who are separated by just a few meters, such as the case of both Koreas, one of them having a system that respects freedom, and the other one having a totalitarian system, where the people are constantly being oppressed. These are completely different realities existing next to one another, but with a well-protected border that keeps both systems properly separated.

On the other hand, there are also countries that have similar levels of freedom and prosperity, and have their borders with little to none supervision, simply because there is no need to enforce it in the first place, an example of this is the border between Belgium and the Netherlands.

Nevertheless, the current perception we have of a country with its national jurisdiction and established borders, is something that could be changed forever thanks to a new generation of decentralized platforms that can be used to create and implement new methods for enforcing laws through open and borderless code, effectively creating a new generation of governance that wasn’t possible until now.

Even though we are living what can be considered as the most prosperous era in humanity’s history, which is by the way, the result of the proliferation of economic freedom in great part of the world, there are still cases where governments don’t respect the liberty of the individual, as I just mentioned in the case of both Koreans, specifically North Korea, people in that country don’t have free lives, and sadly it is incredibly difficult for them to start living in a different place with different laws.

There is also the case of my own country Venezuela, where due to several laws that destroy economic freedom, people are unable to freely make international transactions because the only legal currency is the national one, and the use of any other currency belonging to another country is considered illegal, this of course, causes a domino effect in the economy that ultimately resulted in the worst crisis in the country’s history.

We can find other places where instead of a lack of economic freedom, they have a lack of social freedom, where certain people aren’t allowed to do basic things like getting married to individuals from the same sex, or adopt their own preferred personal look, because they are forced to comply with strict cultural traditions, and all of these can result in a lack of freedom regarding which romantic partner people can have, and which personal look they might adopt.

It is clear we still have a long way to go until the entire human civilization is smart enough to design sustainable societies that are compatible with individual freedom. In the blockchain industry, several solutions are being developed to create a new model of governance, that can be capable of increasing the sovereignty of every single one of its members, Bitnation is a project that is working exactly on this.

Bitnation is a blockchain project that is planning to provide the world with a platform in which people can create new governance models that other individuals can freely opt-in and out anytime they wish without any complications whatsoever, naturally those that are more attractive to individuals are going to be the ones that survive in the long term, so there will be a sort of competition between the different governance models for attracting as many people as possible.

Because this is a blockchain based platform, it would be available to anyone in the world with an internet connection, and the possibilities about what could be achieved with this are practically endless, people could create digital registries about all type of personal information, similar to the ID issues I wrote about yesterday, but involving other aspects, like handling a dispute between 2 parties, and recording the conditions about a particular voluntarily agreement between 2 individuals, always using transparent code and leveraging the immutable registry of the blockchain.

The first goal of this ambitious project, is to provide a platform to everyone in the world, so each individual is free to design the governance model according to his own personal preference, and with time, the free market will take care of discarding those models that are inefficient or not properly designed, and those that have the potential to scale on a sustainable way while providing a good functioning to its users, will certainly be the ones with the biggest adoption.

All of the implications about this platform will be gradually discussed in the next few days, but this is something that could affect not only the way people live their lives, but also the way societies work and the way they are structured.

Blockchain technology can increase the versatility people have when dealing with each other by allowing the creating of new governance models that are completely ruled by transparent code, and where anyone can freely opt-in and out anytime they wish.

This is something that is very needed especially in places where the current jurisdiction don’t allow people to do certain types of activities, but with a governance model created using Bitnation, these same people could participate in a platform that can accept and register pretty much every type of transaction, contracts, among many other things the individual wishes to do.

This article was a general overview of what this project is all about, and the real world issues it plans to solve, with time I will start to take a deeper dive into more complex uses and real implications a platform like this could have to people’s lives.
