The Banker - "How would you like to buy a bank?"
This is a new movie from Apple TV+, a drama about 2 black successful businessmen trying to expand their investment despite suffering constant racism and sometimes even ostracism. The main character is played by Anthony Mackie, a person that even when he was just a boy he showed interest in money topics.
Samual Jackson plays his fun and wise partner, and Nicholas Hoult plays their driven employee who will be key in the story because you see, this takes place in a time where racism was still quite common. So for a black businessman, it was sometimes hard to be taken seriously and receive appropriate treatment.
What these 2 black businessmen did was to train this employee so he could represent their organization when dealing with other parties. They taught him everything he needed to know about their business and they even taught him how to play golf, so he could play the part of your typical wealthy man who is great at golf.
When it comes to large investments, it becomes hard to mask who the real owners are. Eventually, they will have to face a kind of backlash for everything they have been doing and they will need to figure out a way to survive those sophisticated attacks. In no moment they are physically assaulted but using more subtle means their entire organization would inevitably suffer.
I liked the performances, Samuel Jackson was very spontaneous as always, always providing funny moments which is something he does pretty well. Mackie was stiffer than normal, very similar to his character in Altered Carbon season 2, it was appropriate because his character is a very logical person and not very emotional.
This was an interesting drama, it kept me entertained and the overall movie was enjoyable. Drama lovers could certainly give it watch knowing this movie deserves it. There are a few lines about racial conflict so have this in mind if you don't like this topic.
The best
- Very funny moments with Samuel Jackson.
- It was quite the plot, especially how they taught their employee what to say and how to act.
The worst
- The racial conflict lines were a bit overdone, I also think there is an excess in recent films about racism against blacks. They are producing too many films about this and it is tiresome.
