Hello friends, welcome to "I love to educate" is a blog created for educational purposes. To provide support to teachers, students and parents in the teaching-learning process, facilitating the completion of school activities.

Mammals are a class of vertebrates that have milk-producing mammary glands with which they feed the young. Most are viviparous.

The science that studies mammals is called teriology, mastozoology or mamiferology.

Features:

  • The body of mammals is covered with hair. Wool protects animals from the cold. Your body temperature is constant.

What do they eat ?

According to their diet, mammals are classified as:

Carnivores

  • Carnivores. They feed on meat from other animals. For example, the lion and the wolf are carnivorous.
  • Herbivores. They feed on plants. The horse and the elephant, hares, squirrels, giraffes, zebras are herbivores ...
  • Beasts among predators. They tear their prey with sharp fangs. These are wolves, foxes, tigers, lions.
  • Omnivores. They eat food of animal and vegetable origin. like: the bear and the wild boar ...
  • Insectivorous. The anteater and the hedgehog are insectivorous, they eat insects.

Animals live in different places.

  • Many live in forests;
  • Polar bears live in the Arctic.
  • Camels in the desert and can spend a lot of time without water.
  • Whales and dolphins spend their entire lives in the water.

How do mammals reproduce?

Mammals are divided into three groups according to the characteristics of reproduction and development.

  • Oviparous

    Source

Oviparous, they do not give birth to live puppies, but they lay eggs. These include the platypus that inhabit Australia and the surrounding islands.

  • Marsupial mammals.

    Source

Marsupials are mammals in which puppies are born very small, weak and helpless (for example, in a kangaroo 2 m high, the puppy is born only 3 cm long). Therefore, for a long time, such a mother carries the baby in a bag on her belly. In the bag there are mammary glands with nipples. A newborn baby usually hangs on her nipple without releasing it from her mouth. Marsupials are common in Australia and America.

Placental: these are mammals in which a small egg develops after fertilization in a special organ: the uterus, and the embryo is attached to the wall of the uterus by the placenta. In the placenta, through the umbilical cord, close contact occurs between the mother's blood vessels and the fetus.

There are mammals that can fly. These are bats.

  2. How are mammals classified according to their diet?
  3. Investigate Why is it said that most mammals are viviparous?
  4. What kind of food do omnivorous animals eat?
