Adventure to the best Seafood in Vietnam ๐ป๐ณ๐ถ
Seafood has never been at the top of my list for meal choices. I really would just prefer a burger or pizza.
It's funny how our tastes change as we get older, I was a real fussy bugger in Scotland. Since traveling, I've managed to change my diet typically feasting on Asian delights.
One thing I just can't do is spice ๐ถ๐ถ๐ถ
Adventure Time
My partner and I decided to go to her home town, which is just east of HCMC. A place named Ba Ria. Her mum has a house a stone's throw from the river.
Seeing some boats and always up for a little adventure. I said, "Hey, do you think we can rent one of those boats and go explore."
After a few strings pulled, we had managed to hire a boat and driver for the afternoon.
Our boat was a long wooden boat with a big old noisy diesel engine with huge prop hanging out the back end. I loved the raw nature of the boat. It was definitely Vietnamese.
As we powered up the river, we passed so many floating homes, fishing nets galore and men out fishing.
I was curious if we could get some fresh seafood. I noticed a larger floating platform with four men sitting drinking tea and asked if we could say hello and buy some food.
Before I knew it, we were berthed up and sitting with the fishermen.
Like always, when you get out of the cities, it's smiling faces everywhere you go in Vietnam.
One of the men prepared a wood fire while another started pulling oysters and crab fresh from the water. Literally pulling it up through the wooden boards where we sat.
I said jokingly; a beer would be great right now. And before you knew it, our driver was on the boat and steaming down the river to the local floating shop!
Back he came with a case of 24 Saigon Specials ๐คฃ. Perfect for our fresh seafood and new found friends.
Let the feast commence
Our first batch of oysters came! They were unbelievably delicious. I mean, if you were to be served these in a restaurant, you would be on trip advisor in a heart beat to say how amazing they were.
And they kept coming, I really lost count, but reckon I had at least 12 oysters.
Crabs were next, again an unusual experience. Normally the shells are hard on crabs, but these were soft. Apparently, this is rare. I didn't quite understand what was being said. But timing needs to be right. So you have a very short window of opportunity to eat a crab and its shell.
Our final serving was shrimp, so big and tasty.
I was so full!
Obviously, the beer was flowing through all this eating. And our new friends were singing and dancing. My cheeks were sore with all the laughing and smiling.
What a great experience!
But at what cost? Well for the beer, boat and all the food we would have had change from $20!
How much would you pay for this! for me the experince with the locals was priceless. Even if the food was shi*e i'd still have been happy paying 10 times as much.
