Fresh Snowfall in Big Cottonwood Canyon

in #photofeed7 years ago

If you were caught in a time loop, like Bill Murray in Groundhog Day, what would you want the weather to be?

I would want it to be -2 degrees Celsius and snowing gently (provided I had access to a warm fire and some hot chocolate).

I took this photo during the fall in one of my favourite parts of Utah: Big Cottonwood Canyon, a short drive from Salt Lake City. I've driven up here many, many times and seen a few different kinds of weather, but nothing is better here than a fresh snowfall. On this day the trees and rocks were dusted white, but the colours still showed through, and I loved the textures that the snow created (a little bit of misty cloud action doesn't hurt a photo either!).

These textures are lovely man. That first snow is always so beautiful

Thanks man! :)

I totally agree with @nathanielwise, impressive texture. Thanks Derek to have shared what will be my new desktop wallpaper ;)

Oooh awesome! Thank you! :D

nice view but if i have to pick weather in my place of residence it would be around +20 and partly sunny :)
we had gentle winter this year and now for few days is -5 to -10 and it is fricking cold :)

I don't mind that! +20 is perfect summer weather! :)

Very nice photo. I like the area, but have only seen it in summertime

Thank you! I've only seen it in spring and autumn!

Amazing! I'd love to get the opportunity to see sights like this someday.

In the meantime, you seem to be doing a good job of making the best of wherever location you're in!

I'm in Australia, I live in the state of Queensland but spend a lot of time in New South Wales. We don't have landscape anything like what you have there, that's magnificent! I suppose though, what is "normal" to one is not to another. : )

Well, I live in Ontario, and while our landscape is also different to Australian, it's pretty but not particularly interesting (lots of lakes and trees), so I feel the same, I've just been fortunate to be able to visit places like Utah and the Rockies. I always appreciate mountains when I visit them, even small ones like those in Big Cottonwood Canyon!

I like lakes and trees! :D
The trees in your photos are like nothing I have seen. I love most trees though, what's not to love? : ) And lakes... so many photo ops when there's water involved!

You can keep your -2 though... I wouldn't be able to handle that. 22-26 is nice for me! ; )

Hehe, but -2 isn't even cold! ;)

We get heat in excess of 30 degrees even where I live, and it's humid and terrible! The summers are not fun here.

This summer we've had up to 46-47 degrees... those days were horrible!!! 40 use to be crazy hot but we seem to be getting hotter and hotter as the years roll on.

-2 is freezing!! I'm not a huge fan of the cold, or the heat for that matter, I'll take Spring and Autumn weather any day! So if -2 isn't cold, what is (to you)? : )

I would want a beautiful layer of fog in the morning, a partly sunny but crisp day around 55 Degrees F during the afternoon followed by a light rain and a vibrant, cloudy and colorful sunset with peaches, pinks and yellows.

Ps- I have no clue how to convert celsius without a calculator. Silly Canadians/rest of the world and their logical Celsius and Metric systems.

Ohhhhhh, you've planned out the whole day, and it sounds perfect to me! Silly me didn't even think of that, but obviously the best days are the ones with variability and a range of cool weather!

Great view, love the detailed textures and composition. Simple but in the same time lot of going on in the frame. Well done!!

Thank you! I go for diagonal compositions any time they're available. ;)

Love the colour of this shot.

Thank you! :)

As for the question. I think I would take 28 deg so I could simplify my wardrobe .

Ooooph, that's way too hot, dude! More like eliminating your wardrobe.

28 is like a nice winter daytime high temp from where I grew up ;-)

When you say winter, which winter do you mean, exactly? :p

Winter in Queensland.

So not January in Queensland...

No summer in Qld can be horrific. So June/July in Qld! I like extremes; thats why I am living in the frozen wasteland/wonderland which is Northern BC. If you cant cook an egg on your car bonnet or keep you ice cream outside then its just not living.

Hahaha, good philosophy!

From the land where the police cook their breakfast like this .

And yet their uniform is still black!!! :O

Dark blue; its just so bright it looks black !

Haha okay! Still, I feel like they'd want to wear something that doesn't absorb all that egg-frying sunlight?
