When in Buenos Aires in January this year, I did a guided tour of Teatro Colón, the main theatre in Buenos Aires which also ranks among the best and most important theatres in the world. It’s not only the building itself that makes an impression on the visitor. It’s also the history, the interior, acoustics and the status as a world famous theater along with the Paris Opera, London’s Covent Garden, La Scala in Milan etc. World famous orchestras, singers, ballet dancers etc. have perfomed here.

After admiring the beautiful architecture on the outside, we entered to do the guided tour. The building is impressive on the outside, but I found it even more impressive on the inside. The tour lastet one hour and took us through some of the corridors from the entrance and to the main stage. We were told that the theatre was build in 1857, but not on todays location. Todays location of the Teatre Colón was once the location of a railwaystation. The building prosess on this location started in 1908. Since then it has undergone renovations.

As we walked along the corridors toward the Golden Hall, the guide told us several other facts tha I wasn’t aware of. The theatre has it own workshops in the basement. The guide could tell that the theater makes everything itself when it comes to custumes clothes, shoes, wigs, etc. It has an impressive collection such as 25,000 wigs and similar staggering for costumes, shoes etc. We were also told the names of some of the large number of artists who have performed here since it opened in 1908. Tenors like Plácido Domingo, Lusiano Pavarotti, only to mention a few. Ballet dancers, singers and some of the worlds leading orchestras. Indeed a great experience to have this look inside the teatre itself.
