Theme of the day- Daily challenge #thursday-magic - Review of CHILDREN OF BLOOD AND BONE by @dilchamo

Hello bookworms,

Today as per the daily challenge I will do a review about a fantasy book. September is the literature month of Sri Lanka. In September many literature activities are organized in our country. Especially there are book exhibitions, book sales, theatre shows and drama competitions from school level to national level. Since 2005 my parents used to visit book exhibitions in different areas of the country with me. So I used to love books and literature. Even though I’m a grown up now I still have the habit of visiting book exhibitions with my friends. Two years ago at the annual book exhibition one of my friends bought the book “Children of Blood and Bone” which was in the new released section.

I read books with my friends in the rotation method. When I got the chance to read the book I fell in love with the story. I will share a small review on the book “Children of Blood and Bone”.

Path to the story

This book was written by Tomi Adeyemi who is a Female Nigerian Author. While finding about the origin of the book I got to know that the story was written after Tomi went on a trip to Brazil. She has experienced the police violence against black American. To bring the story up she has taken fantasy ideas from stories like Harry Potter and Avatar. She has combined Nigerian culture and Western fantasy in the story.

Themes

The story shows how power is bound up with brutality. The ways of teenagers are trying to get the approval from their parents to jump into the adult world and also the obstacles they face is another theme in this book. The ladies power too plays a role in this story.

Review In Brief

The story takes place in the country of Orisha. There are two inhabited people in this country called Diviners and Kosidan. Diviners have a magical power. King Saran knew the way of removing the magical power and killed many diviners in the country. From that time diviners have faced many obstacles in living. Diviners had to pay high taxes to the government.

Zelie and her brother Tzain helped a girl to flee the local guards. This girl is Princess Amari who is the daughter of King Saran. She has stolen the scroll that can restore the magical effect of diviners once it is touched. Once they regained the power three of them with the scroll went to the temple to rebuild the connection between diviners and the gods. They performed a ritual to build the connection with gods as per the guidelines given by the priest in the temple. Being a secret to everyone, Prince Inan has got the magical ability of detecting memories and feelings of others as he has touched the scroll once.

One day an unkown group of people cought Amari and Inan. After rescuing from that Amari and Inan both agreed to help Zelie to rescue her siblings who were caught by King’s forces. Then king heard about their mission and they fought with diviners. During the fight king’s force captured Zelie and she was tortured by king Saran to destroy the magical power she has and she was imprisoned. Zelie’s father was killed by the king and as a result of the blood magic of her father she got power back and she could come out of the prison. She planned to kill the king. But king’s son Inan also had a magical power and he tried to rescue his father. Unfortunately when the king knew that Inan also had a secret power as diviners he killed his son.

At the end of the story Amari also got the magical power.

My words

This was later filmed but I haven’t watched it. I recommend you to read this book or watch the movie to experience the fantasy in the story and about the historic culture. Thank you for reading my post. Have a good day.
