Grandchildren

My youngest son announced the expected birth of his first child this coming June 2018. I am hoping for a girl.

If you were she and waiting to be born, what would you wish for your future?

Take a minute to think about your best memories and try to project them into the unknown future. You will be ten in 2028 and pilot your first red hovercraft convertible in 2035. Will you wish to attend University or pursue a career? Marriage? Children? Lifestyle?

Back to wishing... How much do you want to struggle? Many of histories greatest people had a difficult childhood. Through hardship, they learned to conquer... or not. But nevertheless, it is your life. Would you wish for easy or hard?

You don’t get to choose your parents, but you can wish for strict or loose. Would you hope for a greenhouse life or excitement in the wild world learning through real dangers?

Keep in mind, there are no correct answers, but your wishes probably give you a glimpse into the good and bad decisions your parents made.

For example, my mother and father both worked to provide me with an easy life. I was raised in a greenhouse without storm or struggle. Life was easy until I left home. I have lived through the results of their decisions. I would wish for a bit more struggle and danger.

The point is, we can’t go back and try again. I am what I am. I did my best at the time. My children are doing their best now. Their children are living in a world that will probably be an exciting time in history.

As a grandparent with loads of experience, I get to watch all of their mistakes. I have a supply of bandages and hugs ready for my children as they learn from their children. And so it goes...

Legacy is the part that passes through from generation to generation. From where I sit, looking both backward and forward, I see our legacy is love.
