The dog was whining at the door, obviously distressed, but she couldn't see anything in the darkness... She could hear strange whispers which made her even terrified as she clinged more tightly to her teddy. The silence engulfed the room, apart from the thrumming of the rain against the tin roof Jane could only hear the thuds of her heartbeat. Just then the staircase creaked, or she thought it did. She could hear footsteps approaching and the dog began to bark furiously. In 1988 Colombia had earned $1.7 billion from coffee exports, just over the estimated $ 1.5 billion in cocaine sales... The door flung open and Aunt Walsh, the next door neighbor stormed out of her apartment angrily, she'd been trying to watch the late night news and the dog wouldn't let her. Jane could see her through the open space in the door standing under her apartment bulb, few metres away from the staircase. She held her cat in one hand, threw the other over her head and screamed 'would you get eet quieeet" then turned around and hobbled inside. She didn't see whoever was at the stairwell. Jane wanted to scream for help but couldn't bring herself to do it. The staircase creaked once more and cold shivers ran down her spine. The room was still dark except for the reflection coming from the half open door and the street lights outside. Jane swallowed hard, clutching her teddy tight.. "Amanda... is that you"...still no reply. A bolt of lightning tore across the sky, Illuminating the room for a second and a peal of thunder followed. Jane was more terrified, what could she do. she searched around frantically for the phone, her hands trembling in the darkness as she felt around for her device. Just then...a notification cane in, her phone beeped twice and came to life brightening the room. It was all the way across the room next to an empty cup on Amanda's study desk. She scurried over to the desk, in an attempt to pick up the phone she tipped the cup over. Her hands unsteady from fear, she picked up the device and dialed 911. Jane was petrified, the phone slipped through her hands and crashed to the floor next to the cup. She was about to scream when the lights suddenly came on "SURPRISE!!!....and there was Amanda screaming by the door way with Ken, her boyfriend already in tears from laughing too hard. "Happy birthday Jane, he said".
The strange noises and the scratching had stopped and Amanda hadn't shown up yet. The room lit up with a bright flash of lightening and thunder rattled the window pane. It had begun to rain more heavily, the roof of the house danced with spray, the murmuring of the rain against the window sounded like the buzzing of angry bees and the rambles frightened Jane. Thirty minutes passed and Amanda still hadn't shown up, she remembered her last words "wait here Jane, I'll be back soon". They both thought they heard someone shatter a window downstairs and almost immediately the lights had gone out. It's been two hours since Amanda left to replace the fuse.
.....911 what's your emergency....hello, hello Jane swallowed hard...there's been a break-in, my...my..sister is missing...I think there's a..
Hello!...911 what's your emergency...the receiver interrupted. She couldn't hear her...the line crackled...9-1...what's..y-r..eme-g-cy.....she was losing her. The storm outside was interfering with the signals. Her breathing became heavy and faster than usual. She glanced at her phone and it was already past midnight. The dog suddenly stopped barking and began to whine, the silhouette of a tall figure stood in the doorway.
