THEFT ON A JOURNEY

in #life6 years ago

I recently had an unpleasant situation when my bag was stolen with everything in it. That was a surprise as usually I am quite conscious but I guess could happen to everyone. Or maybe when surrounded by good people you get used to that safety net.

Ironically on my hundreds of train journeys, never has it happened that anyone stole something. But this time, being at a comfort of a restaurant, I let myself relax and voila! as magicians do in circus: little trick and mass inconvenience for the outperformed. Can you imagine traveling and then all of a sudden being without your money, phone or identification? Yes, I know some of you have experienced that. I hope not so many.

The Kyiv police nicely surprised me with their quick response and politeness. And it was not so difficult for them because there was not much to declare stolen. Imagine the disappointment of the opportunists also at how little they found in the bag of a Ukrainian girl. Not even a fancy phone because -- for convenience sake I don't use Smartphones. The reason is simple. When on train on about 20 hours journey, without possibility to charge by next morning, all these expensive shiny phones are simply out of charge and useless. So that's a rule: phones are for making calls, all other features are unnecessary.

Frankly saying, "simple phones" that look frugal but work for a week without recharge are on my favourites list. Plus I would never be worried if lost one. Funny enough, in other circumstances, usually it is quite difficult to lose such a phone as whenever my simple phone was forgotten at a cinema or restaurant, it always reemerged thanks to its non Iphone styling, lack of desirability and obvious limited functionality. People mostly are nice and friendly and help in such situations returning it back. Once even worst the phone was literally run over by a car when it accidentally fell out of my jeans pocket. And again, nothing happened except a few scratches.

Wise men say that everything is a lesson. So to re-examine one’s habits is a good thing. Mine has been to be more attentive. But my adherence to simple things is not a lesson I need to learn because it works. Why have expensive toys just to show off as all that money they cost could be spend on more interesting things, like journeys and coffee?
