A Short Voting Strategy - Post HardFork 19
One of the changes of HardFork 19 was concentrating the voting power of an account within 10 votes over a period of approximately 24 hours. That means that if you vote 10 times at full power, your voting power gets depleted and you have to wait a few dozens of hours to have it "replenished". Combine this with linear rewards and you get quite a hedonistic view of Steemit: it's like, all of sudden, we're bathing in gold.
After the initial enthusiasm of seeing their vote drawing huge amounts from the rewards pool, the wake call came. Ok, I voted 10 times. And now? What do I do now? Look, there's this very nice post and I really like it and I want to upsteem it but I can only give it just a few cents (if any).
Soon, we all realized it's time to adjust our voting strategy, in such a way that it will make our experience here on Steemit at least equally enjoyable with what we had before HF 19.
Here's what I found working for me (feel free to adjust it as you see fit, these are just general guidelines)
My Core Team - 4 votes full power
These are votes for preferred authors. I like to know that I have enough juice to support the people very close to me (my friends, my girlfriend and so on). Sometimes I increase the voting power for this part, if there are specific commitments, like it is now, with the 30 days writing challenge, during which I committed to vote 3 posts at full power every day.
My Tribe - 15 votes at 20% power
This equates to 3 votes full power. These are the votes that I reserve for people with whom I have a close relationship but can't call them my "core team". These are authors with whom I interact for more than 3-4 months, with whom I exchanged more than just a few comments and who are regularly posting. They are shaping my overall preferences on Steemit.
My Casual Social - 20 votes at 10% power
This equates to 2 votes full power. Those are votes that I reserve for new content, every time I happen to browse the trending page or some tag that I'm interested in. They also serve the function of "discovery votes", like investing in new authors and see if they really take off.
Expect The Unexpected - 1 full vote
This is for the gem that may come out unexpectedly. I hate it when I see something really valuable and my voting power is completely depleted. So I keep one in reserve, just for that.
As I wrote this I realized something which never crossed my mind until now: this upsteeming thing in Steem has a lot in common with trading. I mean, there's the genuine appreciation for an author or a piece of content, but there's always the underlying calculations about how much capital you have, what the ROI can be and how much you can "trade" in a given day. Back when I was doing FOREX, I found the trading discipline to be the cornerstone of a profitable activity (I didn't make millions trading FOREX, but got out with both my balls intact, which is to say I didn't lose either).
So yes, voting in Steemit does require a bit of discipline to get the most out of it.
I'm really curious how this change will play out with bots (already saw a lot of bots are deactivated), and how a new batch of successful authors will emerge after this paradigm change.

You are really all about strategy and planning, I admire this in you :D I do like that you keep some for the unpredictable :P
Sounds like a solid system. Its nice to give a meaningful reward to something truly impressive, I suppose that's why most people are pleased with the results of the HF, they just weren't able to before.
I'm looking forward to being able to support my friends here when they finally begin posting.
Thanks for sharing your strategy, I'll have to adopt something similar.
Yep, these are just guidelines, do whatever works for you.
You have a very well thought out system on how to use your votes. I like how much thinking and consideration you put behind it.
I think what I like most about this change is that it actually gives more flexibility to voting. You have a choice to reduce your voting power so it mimics the old system before HF 19. However, the new concentrated votes give users the option to reward excellent content with a much stronger upvote. Overall, the changes from HF 19 gives us more choices with how we assign votes.
Yep, HF 19 is probably the most popular HF so far.
You're right, HF19 let me with 15% vote power because of steemvoter. Now I should wait to grow it to 100. :D
I like your distribution with these 4 categories of voting, it's obvious after reading.
Are you always vote when your Steem power is 100%? Or more than 95%? Do you have kind of strategy?
I vote even when my voting power is at 60-65%. But not lower than that.
Good morning :)
The other approach would be - vote as you feel like and don't care about the voting power, number of votes, ... as we all really do in the real life. We don't think and plan, we act on instinct.
My voting power is currently at 22.48%. I really need a few days off line to get it back to 100%. But now, with your challenge ... Tough :) Lucky I am going on a long vacation :) Lucky in more than one way. I yearn for sea and sun and sand and beer and wine :)
Have a great Sunday!
Enjoy your holiday, looking forward to my few days of seaside myself. Soon, my friend, soon :)
That is all well and good if you can adjust your voting power. I believe I need a lot more SP before the slider comes into play.
Yes, you need at least 300 SP.
300, I couldn't remember the exact number. Quite a way to go for me, until then I will vote as best as I can.
It will happen sooner than you think :)
So i keep hearing. :)
That hasn't been my experience, I've got 200 (of you include the 27 delegated to me from sign up) and can choose between 1-100%.
It must be changed, then, or the number was indeed lower. Anyway, that's what was in my mind, I'm happy you could do it even earlier.
It's 500 Steem Power for the web interface but I think it's available on the eSteem app and https://beta.chainbb.com for all.

Thanks for the update. I spend most of my time on the web interface. I like having a full sized keyboard.
I just invested in a laptop an am enjoying the keys again!
Which OS are you running?
Windows 10 on a Spanish keyboard so things aren't perfect!
Interesting, not familiar with a Spanish keyboard.
I'm monitoring my vote power all the time now. I think a lot of people are!
It feels precious and powerful. Maybe that's a good thing.
Yes, I even got requests to include it in steem.supply and it really makes sense. It is precious.
yes i wanna make sure im always using it because if we dont use it up, it ddoesnt get saved up does it it just goes wway if u dont use it all up right?>>
or does itstart top accumulate if u dont use ur daily voting power? and oes ittake 1 day or five days to recharge I havent been looking this up as much as i need to i guess? because i have been making my own assumptins aboit whats going on lol
so my upvots are like $1 at full power if i klet em recharge, i think or 70 cents to one dollar ....cuz at like 30 percet votng power a 100 percent upcote gae me like 30 cents so it like one dollar right? and i gave like 1000 dollars and thatgives me $1 total poer upvote
which means your 300,000 gives you around a $3000 full power uovote?
I did notice your upvotes can be QUITE high VERY amazing yes anyway u coudl chek out this post i did about getting Africans on Steemit with free wifi and about the succes story of four of my african teem africa memvers who EACh havea $1000 post thankls to thejohalfiles who gave them all a chance to now sow off steemitto people in the rcomunity and africans will Flip Out when they see someone is making thousand bucks offf a single post! ven $1 ff a post is good enough for most people!

I like this blog because not only is your strategy reasonable but I like how honest about it you are. Your simply saying hey, I reserve my most powerful votes for my core people I care most about. I think lots of people do that because its nice to be able to support th people in our life with such capitol. Its also nice though to be able to interact and support the larger community but just not with as much priority.
Thanks for the post, if I wasn't following you already I would!
SteemON!
Nice post. These are authors with whom I interact for more than 3-4 months, with whom I exchanged more than just a few comments and who are regularly posting. They are shaping my overall preferences on Steemit. I like this sentence. Thanx for sharing.
You're welcome, do whatever works for you :)
thank's a lot
I need to think about my votes more now. Previously they gave a few cents, but now it can be dollars. I'll reserving big votes for special cases, but I don't have a fixed plan for this. Posts that already have a good reward may get less.
