Poetic Television Review: War Stories (Firefly, S1X10, 2002)

In shadows of Serenity's past,
A villain rises, fierce and vast,
Adelei Niska, crime lord bold,
Feeling wronged, his wrath is told.

The tenth episode, a turning point,
Reintroduces this foe, whose heart is dark,
Quoting Shan Yu, a warlord's words,
His power and viciousness are heard.

Wash and Mal, in a trap they fall,
A test of loyalty, for one and all,
Jealousy and trust, a tangled web,
In the darkness, the crew must be set free from Niska's clutches cruel.

Three segments unfold, a tale of three,
With varied quality, some seem bleak,
The first, a slow and uninspired start,
War stories and subplots, a disjointed heart.

The second, a darkly humorous affair,
Mal and Wash, in captivity, they share,
Banter and wit, in the face of pain,
A compelling tone, their bond remains.

The final act, a rescue mission bold,
Serenity's crew, a united front, they hold,
Combat and bravery, a test of skill,
River's marksmanship, a highlight, still.

Though flawed, War Stories stands apart,
Elevated by Fairman's portrayal of Niska's heart,
A villainous performance, strong and true,
In the Firefly canon, a standout, too.
