Burger and Beer, Belgian Style - SteemitPhotoChallenge Entry
This is one of the best €18 burgers I ever ate.
Or maybe one of the only... Seriously, €18 for a hamburger?!
As an American expat in Belgium for many years, it is amusing to see the various food fads that come and go. Upscale burger joints seemed to be en vogue though perhaps not as much today as in recent years. I am pleased to see burritos are starting to gain a foothold as the next big thing. Pulled pork BBQ is up and coming as well, though my days of eating burgers and BBQ are somewhat behind me.
Back to that burger. This one was coupled with some authentic Belgian frites, and a tasty Duvel beer.
Duvel means Devil in Dutch. It is one of the better known Belgian beers and at 8.5% alcohol packs a punch. The story goes that a taster once exclaimed it was a real devil to drink as compared with the other Abbey beers at the time, hence the name.
Also of interest, ask a Belgian about the origin of French Fries and they will tell you they originated in Belgium (though the French may disagree). Legend has it that Americans in WWII ate Belgian Frites but attributed them to the French since the Belgian soldiers were speaking French. From there, french fries became a popular food in the US.
In Belgium, frites as they are called, are also quite popular. They are typically served with mussels, steak, or just in a paper cone with a healthy dollop of mayonnaise.
This is my first entry for the SteemitPhotoChallenge #16 (Food)
