While I was on duty today, a patient was brought with burns to hospital. Patient was having burns due to firepot that is being commonly used here in winter to keep warm . So cases of burns are common in winter. I realised that people are doing some activities which they shouldn't , as part of first aid. So, I thought of sharing a series of first aid posts related to different topics commonly encountered in day to day life. How cool is the idea? boss! Motive is to benefit people with authentic knowledge, so that no harm is being done to patient because of prevalent age old traditional beliefs and practices.

First aid is the first and immediate assistance given to any person suffering from either a minor or serious illness or injury with care provided to preserve life, prevent the condition from worsening, or to promote recovery. It includes initial intervention in a serious condition prior to professional medical help being available.

FIRST AID IN BURNS.
STOP BURNING IMMEDATELY
Depending upon the agent causing burns , physical or chemical, action has to be initiated . First and foremost thing to be done is to set out fire or stop the person's exposure to hot liquid, chemical, steam, radiation, or other source causing burn.
Now that source causing the burns has been eliminated. Next look at the garments of the person and try to remove burned clothing. One thing to be taken care of is, not to pull the clothes attached to the skin. Rather cut the cloth around the attached margin and make sure that the cloth attached is not burning and is not too hot to cause further damage to the person.
Next step that I am going to mention is extremely important and commonly ignored step. So pay close attention to this step. it includes removal of Jewellary, belts, and tight clothing worn by patient. it is because burns cause swelling of affected organ which in presence of external compression is dangerous.
COOL The BURN
it can be done by holding the burnt part under running tap water or do cold compresses. Cooling the burnt organ provides some relief from pain. Don't use ice cold water because it can cause more harm than benefit.
PROTECT BURN
Protect the burnt surface from exposure to surroundings by covering loosely with clean cloth or NON -ADHESIVE STERILE bandage.
Please take care while applying any home remedy. Do not apply butter, oil, garlic paste etc , which can cause infectionse.
Consult DOCTOR immediately.
As mentioned in the definition of first aid, it is assistance provided before reaching professional medical care facility. So don't just stop at the first aid. Go ahead and consult doctor.
