Carrot, Swiss chard, and sweet yellow onions!

in #foodlast month

I'm planting like a wild man up here in Northern BC Canada! The ground has thawed, and I foresee an early Summer, so I'm not waiting any longer. Two days ago, I planted snow peas, green leaf lettuce, and carrots. Yesterday, I planted shelling peas, romaine lettuce, and green onions. Today, I planted Swiss chard, more carrots, and yellow onions.

There's my pale hand and some Swiss chard seeds. These will have large bushy green leaves with bright red and orange stalks.

Yeah, I'm using chopsticks (new and unseparated) as row markers! I'll get more professional next year.

I did a second row of carrots today, along with some sweet onions. "Sweet" refers to it being the type you use fresh, rather than the type suitable for storing over the Winter. They will be large yellow onions ready to be cooked fresh from the garden, starting in late Summer. I haven't grown this type before so I'm looking forward to it.

Here's today's update photo:

We've been getting plenty of sunshine, but the grass hasn't turned green yet, probably because there hasn't been any rain! Things are already starting to get dry out there, which isn't a good sign this early in the year. There isn't a lot of snowpack up in the mountains around us, which foretells a dry Summer. It plays nicely into the climate change agenda, but that's a post for another time.

In short, I'd like to see some Spring rains soon. We need a good 3 months of cool temperatures, regular rainshowers, and lush green vegetative growth.

THEN bring on the heat for July and August!

I'm hoping for a more normal weather year for once, and that I get my surgery soon, and for world peace while I'm at it. Thanks for vising my garden.

Keep on growing,
DRutter
