In go the peas!

in #garden27 days ago

It's time (or maybe it's 6 weeks early?) to plant peas here in Northern Canada! Actually, I planted most of my peas 2 weeks ago, but today I sowed the rest.

Those are my seeds saved from my 2021 garden in the sunny Okanagan region. They did okay there. In theory, up here in the cooler and wetter Northwest, I should be able to grow a lot more peas. Let's hope so! Last year wasn't bad, but I'm hoping for an even bigger and longer harvest in 2024. It will all depend on the weather they throw at us.

Speaking of that, we did get a tiny bit of rain, finally. You can see it in the update photos:

There are the past couple daily update photos, showing plowing/tilling progress in the upper field. I put those peas into the close edge of the upper field. The grass greened up a little bit after the rain, but it's still pretty crusty.

There are now about a dozen rows of food crops planted. I don't know how many have survived the frosty mornings we've been having now and then, but we'll soon know. Nothing is up yet, so if I don't see some lettuce seedlings soon, I'll re-seed. (Lettuce is normally the first thing up, out of the crops I've planted)

Plenty of bulbs up!

Not sure what that is, but it's healthy! We'll know soon enough.

Another daffodil blooming along the front of the house! (And I see a dandelion starting on the left side of the photo...)

That's garlic, several sprouts coming up from a bulb that was planted whole in November. I may break it up and/or transplant it to a better spot. I'm hoping to have a LOT of garlic this year. No matter how much I manage to grow, it won't be anywhere near enough to meet our needs. I swear we go through a bulb a day around here.

And that's my red star dahlia. I thought I had dug it up in the Autumn, but I guess I missed a few tubers, because it apparently survived the Winter and popped up last week. Hello! I'll plant the tubers I dug up and kept inside right beside these ones. By mid Summer they'll be nice and bushy, covered in pretty bright red star-shaped blooms.

Thank you for visiting my garden! Until next time.

Grow in peace.
