New Zealand blog day 1 - ear-aches and flying are not happy bedfellows

Flying with problem ears has always been a bit scary for me. Until today.

So two days ago, out of the blue I got an ear infection. Yay. Especially because today we were due to fly to New Zealand on holidays.

My normal tactic when I go on a flight and my ears are feeling a bit dodgy is to load up on menthol cough lollies and chew them like crazy as the plane descends. Because what happens is that my ears hurt like a bastard as the air pressure increases.

So chewing is a way to alleviate that because it helps open up the sinuses. So does menthol.

Well, that has been the theory anyway.

But you know what? It hasn't worked very well, and last time I flew (before today) my ears hurt for days afterwards.

But today, my wife and daughter noticed an ad for ear plane ear plugs in the Brisbane airport terminal. Basically, you stick these hollow ear plugs in your ears and they keep the pressure equal inside and outside the ear.

And OMGods: they worked. Totally recommended.
