Most of the people in the uk will remember Billy Butlin. The man who invented the holiday camp we know today. But what do you really know about him?
Hi name was Sir William Heygate Edmund Colborne Butlin born in South Africa 12th June 1899.
Parents were William and Berth Butlin.
Billy didn't have a very nice childhood as his parents split before he was 7 and he returned to England with his mother. For the next few years he followed his grandmother family fairs around the country. His mother made a living there selling ginger bread.
This is where Billy learnt commerce and entertainment. He would use this knowledge to build his empire

People flocked to his camps by the millions arriving by bus and train
I never went there as a child but as an adult with children we went there many time and had wonderful holidays
I've been to Filey, Skegness, and Pwllheli
More up to date ... A lot of the camps have now closed and the ones left have been modernised beyond recognition.
I was at the old Butlins site only 2 weeks ago in Filey staying on the same site. Which is now The Bay owned by Hoseasons
I took this picture of the old Billy Butlins house on the hill. Which is now rental apartments
Great memories
