Care of the Light-Sensitive Sense Organ(Eye)

Compliments of the season to you, I salute @khursheedanwar specially for coming up with this timely contest on eye care in an era where people wrongly exposes themselves to lots of eye-related activities without considering the side effects in the near future.

Just as chemical elements are made up of tiny particules called atoms so also are humans made up of tiny particles called cells. There are billions of cells in the human body. The combination of cells give rise to tissue; tissues combines to give organs as organs combines to give systems and the combination of the various systems give rise to the human.
There are various organs in humans; they include:

  1. The Eye
  2. The Nose
  3. The Skin
  4. The Ear
  5. The Tongue
  6. The Heart
  7. The Kidney
  8. The Lungs, etc.

The first five are referred to as Sense Organs. Sense Organs in my own perspective are parts of the human body that captures and transmit environmental signals(stimuli) to the central nervous system(CNS) and vise versa.

For the sake of this contest put together by @khursheedanwar; I will focus on the Eye.
The Eye is made up of optical cells and nerves. It receives signals from the environment with the aid of light reflection through various medium to the CNS.

The cells in the middle of eye lenses last for an entire life.

The different parts of the eye include:

  1. The Retina
  2. The Conjunctiva
  3. The cornea
  4. The Lens
  5. The Cones and Rods
  6. Aqueous humour
  7. The Iris
  8. The Sclera
  9. The External muscles
  10. Vitreous gel, etc.

There are a whole lot of nutrients needed for the proper functioning of the eye. These nutrients are majorly obtained from plant and animal products.
Some of them are:
Vitamin A which helps the eye to see in low light, maintaining the functioning of the light sensitive cells(retina). Its absence could lead to night blindness. Some sources of this vitamin are sweet potatoes, carrot, spinach, etc.

Vitamin C that could be obtain from fruits and vegetables like oranges, pepper, etc. It helps to prevent age-related eye disease like cataracts.

Vitamin E is responsible for preventing the degeneration of the retina as a result ofg the formation of free radicals from the fatty acids on the retina. It could be obtained from products such as egg yolk, vegetable oil, peanut, etc.

Omega-3-fatty acid that could be obtained from the consumption of fish such as sardines, salmons, tuna and some plants product such as walnuts, flaxseeds, etc.

Humans engage in series of activities on a daily basis that involve the eye and from the Newton's third law of motion which states that for every action, there's equal and opposite reaction. So, whatever we expose our eyes to will tell its health condition in a period of time.

Some persons are living today with eye defect(s) as a result of wrong actions. We must avoid certain actions to maintain a good eye vision.
Some of them are:
• Exposure to ultra-violet light as it could damage our eye lens, cornea, etc.
• Staring at screen(phones, computers, etc) for very long hours.
• Poor/ unbalanced diet.
• Exposure to irritants and harmful chemicals.
• Smoking.
• Going to sleep with makeup.
• Over use of eye drops.
• Wearing contact lenses incorrectly.

I don't think there's anyone that would want to live with an eye defect; It's therefore our personal responsibilities to take care of our eyes except for the babies that would need someone to assist them.

Prevention is better than cure.

There are certain things we can do to take good care of our eyes;
Some of them are:
• Eating of healthy diet (with the consumption of fruits that rich in vitamin A, B, C, E, etc; and vegetables.
• Avoid smoking
• Wearing sunglasses when necessary.
• Regular exercise
• Periodic eye examination
• Adequate eye rest; etc.

Researchers suggest that people who work for longer hours on computers (like the steemians)should always adopt the 20-20-20 rule which states that an individual every 20minutes should look away about 20feets ahead of them for 20seconds.

Give your eye the attention it needs; trying as much as possible to maintain actions that would boost your sight.
I invite @bossj23 @basil20 @nsijoro @thinkbest7 and @cindy to participate in this contest.
