Stand-up comedy has become a sort of savior for my leisure time, as I've never really been into slapstick humor that relies heavily on physical gestures or other gimmicks. Image source here

In Indonesia, slapstick comedy stands out as its own form of entertainment, especially for the lower middle class. The reason, of course, is because this type of comedy entertains in light and quirky ways. Scenes of stumbling, falling, misspeaking, and even fake quarrels are all part of the appeal.

Back in the 2010s, shows like this were heavily aired on national television channels, especially during Ramadan to entertain the public. Lately, I'm not sure if this kind of comedy still exists or not, considering I haven't been in touch with television for over 5 years.

I also don't provide my children with television at home because I limit their screen time to ensure their learning activities are not disrupted, allowing their motor and intellectual skills to develop without distractions.

Our country is shaken by heartbreaking news today. Priya Prayogha Pratama, one of my favorite comedians, passed away today (09/04). The man known by his stage name Babe Cabita was a stand-up comedian who won the Stand Up Comedy Indonesia (SUCI) season 3 competition back in 2013. This post is my way of paying tribute to Babe and other stand-up comedians who have entertained us, the people of Indonesia, amidst the tumult of our country's politics. News source here

Returning to comedy. In the 90s through the 2000s, I remember the popular television genre at that time was sitcoms (situational comedy). In Indonesia, we can mention series like Bajaj Bajuri, Office Boy, Suami-Suami Takut Istri, and many more.

Unlike slapstick, sitcoms, as the name suggests, present serialized comedy programs where each episode is set in different situations. In my opinion, sitcoms are a blend of theatrical drama and film, where the punchlines are often accompanied by the background laughter of the audience.

I enjoy sitcoms because the comedy delivered tends to be more "substantial" compared to slapstick and includes a lot of satirical elements that require extra effort to understand. It's like saying you have to think before you laugh. Although I admit that in Indonesia, the quality of sitcom jokes is almost on par with slapstick.

I prefer watching American sitcoms like Friends and The Big Bang Theory, and even animated sitcoms like Family Guy, although it's not categorized as my go-to show. I only watch them occasionally for entertainment when I need it. Image source here

However, stand-up comedy remains the comedy genre that I am most interested in so far. The reason is simple, because as a man, I need an "outlet" for negative emotions and tiredness that I experience from work. One form of entertainment that can lift my mood is watching stand-up.

So far, I have never watched my favorite stand-up comedian perform on stage; I have seen them all through several streaming services that I subscribe to.

Once I wanted to buy tickets for the Indonesian comedian Pandji Pragiwaksono to attend his "Komoidoumenoi" world tour. It happened that Aceh was one of the places he visited. Unfortunately, the event (in Aceh) was canceled, so I could only enjoy it through streaming.

If asked who my favorite comedians are, there are tons of them. Even my ten fingers plus ten toes are not enough to count them. But because I am a person who prefers black humor, I will choose two of the best in their field, namely Jimmy Carr and Jim Jefferies. Forgive me, God!

The best joke I heard from Jimmy Carr is: 'When you eat a lot of spicy food, you can lose your taste. When I was in India last summer, I was listening to a lot of Michael Bolton.' Sorry Michael Bolton, but this joke is really funny LOL. Photo by Daniel Robert Dinu from Gigxels

A closing statement from me: Life is comedy, so make it a funny one.

Hey my friends @wakeupkitty @ayijufridar and @asiahaiss, do you also enjoy stand-up comedy, specifically black humor? Share your thoughts by participating in this contest. Peace!

Hi @kouba01, thank you for your warm welcome and for supporting my post. I agree with you that comedy has a universal appeal and it crosses cultural boundaries. As long as there is a language there must be something funny and finally, it will be a topic for comedians

¡Saludos amigo!🤗

So sad to hear about "Priya Prayogha Pratama" passing away. My condolence to his family and fans.

Comedy contributes alot to our wellbeing mentally as humans. Maybe only a sadist wouldn't enjoy a comedy, I guess.

I do also enjoy comedy almost every day and I have some good stand up comedians on my top list.

I have the videos of these one on my phone, so many of them.

I know Jimmy carr 😀, he is a very funny guy. He was my maths teacher favourite international comedian. He had a lot of his videos on his phone.

I wish you good luck on your entry sir.

I like black humour and most of the old comedians I know or followed make me laugh. I am not sure if they are what you call 'stand up'.

The only comedians I saw were Urbanus (Belgium) and one Dutch one.
On New Year's eve there's always a show on TV with a comedian discusding the year. Years ago I couldn't help noticing they started more tiptoeing. NL is not the only country where humour is under fire.
During the lock downs Rowan Atkinson spoke out and said we should fight for keeping black humour and more comedians said so.

I no longer watch TV but there are online tv shows, including standup comedians showing the real news - humour included.

Next to that therr is 'de Speld' (the needle). They even have their own politic party called: Party Against the People. If there are elections they make new commercials to vote for them.

Everything that goes wrong and is corrupt they name. It's good for a laugh especially the guy you see in those commercials. They always use the same concept: how to screw the people and end their commercial with: hey, loser if you have nothing to do click on the thumbs up.

The comments given on the videos are great. If they would run for president they would get all the votes since they are the only ones keeping their promises...breaking necks, more taxes, removing all bus stops, no care for the elderly, making healthcare too expensive, stealing children from parents because of tax scandals, costs for living up, saleries down and and and...

It's good to know there are still people using their brain, seeing what's going on and trying to make people aware of it.

Unfortunately, it is something rare in Indonesia, because when a comedian tries to put a "Political theme" as the topic they will be easily bullied by the buzzer while the opposition will definitely love it.

But, I have some comedians other than what I have mentioned in my post it was included such as Rowan "Mr Bean" Atkinson.

Dyou know what, on a very stressful day I will search for "Tom and Jerry or Mr. Bean" to watch.

Let's enjoy the humor since it often tells us the truth about life itself...LOL

I like Cartman (Sout park), just like Ed, Edd & Eddy. Rowan Atkinson's "Black Adder* is a good one too. How about Life of Brian?

Mr. Bean the cartoons are good too.

The pixar short film make me happy plus all bad characters in Disney film. 🤣 They say things no one dares to say.

With us they try to fight the comedians too plus artists.

Hello @el-nailul your talks about comedy in Indonesia and how it's changed over time. You remember the old days when sitcoms were popular and now you prefer stand-up comedy.

It's sad to hear about Babe Cabita's passing but you honor his memory well. Your thoughts on limiting screen time for kids show your care for their development. Thanks for sharing your memories and favorites،wish you success 💖🤗🌸💐🌺💞.

thank you for the invitation. I will allocate time to enliven it.
