RE: Needlework Monday - Ends Upon Ends - Crocheted Baby Blanket Progress Report!

in #needleworkmonday8 years ago

Hey, it is coming out AMAZING!!! I love how you alternated the colour pattern instead of repeating...

So, the tails...with so many, I would suggest a border, one row single where you crochet over the ends (which should be fine because they are already knotted). The single crochet should hold in the tails well because it is a tighter stitch...then a row of double.
The boarder will make a nice finished look, and soften the edges...and with one colour it will frame and tie the other colours together.

I crochet the ends in as I go unless I am doing a crazy afghan to use up random yarn...so I knot, then fold the tails over and crochet over them. There are two tricks...one is to stagger the tails, meaning don't leave both the same length...6 to 8 stitches, then stretch it out before cutting one tail...another 4 stitches, stretch it out again and then trim the second tail.

Stretching before trimming is the main key...it loosens the fibers to blend them into the other stitches so the tails don't pull out as the blanket is used later. Sometimes I have to go back and trim the tails here and there if one or two pop out, but there is no unraveling, because all tails were knotted before tucking them in.

Once the blanket is washed once or twice, those tails will felt into the rest of the fabric nicely, and will never pull out :)

Not sure if you can see the border on this one, but it was a winter crib blanket...it will help the blanket keep it's shape too...

Awesome! Thank you for such a well descriptive solution. I love your suggestions. I always unknot the ends before sewing them in, I never considered leaving them knotted and them crocheting over them. I love Monday’s!! 😅😃 Just to make sure I understand, when you say stretch the ends you mean pulling them tighter right? Yes I can see the ends of your blanket which is beautiful btw! I normally do a fancy edge for girl blankets but I can still add that on after the single crochet and double crochet rows. Thank you so very much for you help and suggestions, you rock lady!!

Okay awesome, I will head over there to message you for instructions about the trade ;) No apologies, my life is always busy so I completely understand :)
