TL;DR 5 Sentence Summary - What is the EOS Asynchronous Smart Contract Platform?
Blockchain technology relies on sequential transaction processing, which causes delays and can render the technology inefficient.
The throughput of a blockchain using sequential processing of transactions is limited to the computational capacity of a single CPU core.
However EOS is approaching this differently with asynchronous smart contracts (ASCs). The EOS project aims enable a blockchain to process millions of transactions per second.
The major advantages of asynchronous smart contracts are an increased transaction throughput, the potential to eliminate network fees, and providing a viable scaling solution.
In theory, this will allow the underlying blockchain to process a high amount of transactions at the same time, while still being able to serve other network commands.

Right now, the general public only knows of Bitcoin and Ethereum for the most part.
Ethereum has become synonymous with Smart Contracts, however, the promise that EOS brings is extremely intriguing. Dan Larimer has already proven that he's competent in this space. Even though EOS' technology is a bit of a mystery, I'm confident EOS will be one of the big players when all is said and done.
With the dip lately, it may be a good time to pick some up :)
