Almenara and the Castle Ruins on the Mountain – My Hike Last Month
Hello everyone. I wanted to talk about my visit to Almenara last month. It is a town in the Castellón district. We hiked to the castle and tower located in the nearby mountains. There are castle ruins here, along with a tower. That day, we walked towards the site and admired the surrounding landscape. I already knew that there were beautiful views from the top of these mountains.
We were trying to take a different path to go up. It was February when we visited and the almond trees were in bloom.
The population of Almenara was around 5000, but I checked and it has now reached 6700. On Sundays especially in the afternoon, everything is closed in small Spanish towns.
Almenara is located on the border of the Castellón and Valencia provinces but officially belongs to Castellón. Nearby is Sagunto, which is part of Valencia.
The route we took looked quite interesting. We could definitely see the sea. We specifically visited in February because, during this period, the almond trees bloom, making the area look stunning.
The path became increasingly rugged. From here, we could see part of Almenara and the sea in the distance. There were also wetlands and a protected nature park nearby.
The newly planted trees in this area will create a beautiful path in the future. People gradually make their living spaces more beautiful. This region was primarily agricultural. Compared to other nearby towns like Xilxes or Nules, Almenara has been more dependent on agriculture.
By train I could reach Valencia in about 40 minutes and Castellón in half an hour.
I arrived at the path leading to the castle ruins. There was a very steep slope, so those coming with children should be careful. We climbed up and from there, another tower was visible.
The gates appeared to be closed, but we still wanted to take in the general view. The castle walls were quite thick and impressive. The scenery from here was breathtaking. Castellón's long coastline, with both sandy and pebble beaches, looked beautiful.
This castle once had strategic importance. Nearby is the famous Sagunto castle, which was captured by Hannibal.
From the castle, we could also see Almenara itself. Just imagining how they carried the stones to build this place is astonishing.
The path we took on the way down was slightly different, surrounded by beautiful nature. We wandered through the streets of Almenara and from every direction, the castle we had just descended from was visible.
Thank you for joining me on this journey. See you next time, take care..
