Mercury and You! -- Do you know what your mind is thinking?

Pay attention to Mercury ...

Another metaphysical traveler I know, another lover of Astrology and Tarot whose spiritual search for self-understanding and life's meaning I've always considered on a par with mine, said to me once, quite casually, "I don't pay much attention to Mercury transits. Mercury doesn't seem all that important to me."

Then she hurried on to whatever she was really talking about -- something other than Mercury and his value. I don't even remember what that other subject was ... or what prompted that amazing bit on her view of Mercury's transits. But I remember that little toss-away tidbit, and how it stopped me cold in my tracks, utterly amazed.

Not pay attention to Mercury transits? Declare that the symbol for your mind ... your connection into conscious reality ... and his doings in your horoscope ... doesn't seem all that important to you? Well, it certainly jarred me to a halt. Without your mind, your perspectives, opinions, beliefs and interests -- and the ability to articulate these ... who are you?

... because it's important.

Imagine if someone you were talking to ... rattling on about something else ... suddenly announced, "Yeah, I ran over a guy and killed him the other day. Just left him lying there in the street and went on. Nothing else I could do for him at that point." I think you'd find that memorable enough to block out whatever they said next.

I did manage to bite my tongue before saying, "Yeah, and it shows." I just let the stream of time carry the moment away, like I heard that remark every day. No problem. It is, after all, her life, her chart and her choice. Like everyone else, she gets to do what she wants. Including ignore it.

Your thoughts are part of you!

People do that with their whole charts, their whole lives, all the time. It doesn't surprise me any more. But it is unusual to see it with someone who ought to know better. So, I'm working on what I'm supposed to learn from that moment, the way I do with experiences that make me stop and go ... HUH???

Maybe because Mercury is often so close to the Sun, people lose track of his operations and importance. Maybe because our thoughts and perceptions are such a part of who we are, we forget we're generating these perceptions. We're interpreting this information, and those create both our awareness and our understanding of life through the things that happen and our beliefs about them.

So are your perceptions.

Two people view the same painting -- and see entirely different things, gain entirely different meanings. Two people go through very similar life experiences -- and come away with different ideas about what caused it, different messages about what it meant, and what the ultimate results were -- or will be.

Psychologists talk about self-fulfilling prophecies, a subtle, almost back-handed, way of acknowledging that our self-image, our philosophy of life, and our experience of life itself is vastly influenced by the workings of our conscious mind and how it interprets its harvest of information. This is what Mercury in a horoscope is all about, and why its importance and actions can't be short-changed, taken for granted ... or ignored.

Two ways of seeing life.

Ironically, my horoscope and that of my conversational partner -- the one I mentioned at the start -- may themselves show why we see something as fundamental as Mercury energy so differently. Her Mercury is in the same sign as her Sun and closely conjunct to Venus. So, for her, Mercury is closely connected to all things of value. And she does indeed love her life-of-the-mind with a rare passion. It literally defines who she is ... even to herself.

In my horoscope, Mercury is about as far from the Sun as it can get. It is never more than 28 degrees from the Sun for anyone ... and in my chart, those two are nearly 25 degrees apart. Mercury came out of retrograde barely two days before I was born.

It is in a different sign than my Sun. It is conjunct to Mars in my chart -- so I see thoughts and information as highly active life components -- and things to be acted upon. It is also square to Uranus -- the only other major aspect it forms in my chart. To me, ideas and knowledge come quickly and easily, but they are always highly original -- and I am very aware that I don't see the world ... or think like ... many other people at all.

So where is your Mercury?

So, where is the Sun in your horoscope? And where is Mercury? Knowing those two positions can give you some things to think about (literally!!) regarding you ... and how your mind works, how you see the world and how you and your mind work together to understand and manage life.

My next article on Mercury will give you things to look for and things you can tell about yourself just by noting the relationship between Mercury and the Sun. First though, you either need to already know your chart ... or go get a copy of your horoscope ... so you can see what I'll be talking about.

If you've always known there was more to Astrology than Sun Sign material and the three line daily horoscope in the newspaper, climb aboard and follow this blog. You'll find a world of wisdom detailing how you were designed to work with life ... and why you are the way you are -- all in quick-to-read, easy-to-digest-and-remember, written-in-plain-English essays that offer plenty of food for thought.

So where is The Sun in your chart -- and what does it have to say about your basic personality? And where is Mercury in your chart -- and what does it say about your intellectual interests and how you look at life?

Little by little, I'm doing a set of articles that talks about all the elements in your horoscope have to say about you. If you "know something" about Astrology -- or know something about your chart placements, that will help you get more from this material.

If you don't ... well, this is one place you can learn. We all have to start somewhere ... because we aren't born knowing this stuff. Meanwhile, if you've never seen your horoscope ... and don't have a clue how to work with it, maybe it's time to find out. There are lots of "chart services" on the internet -- some of whom produce decent, readable charts "for free" and some are so awful and confusing that even I can't read them easily -- and I've worked with charts for decades.

One extremely user-friendly chart site is here: AstroLabe I recommend them if you want a simple, easy-to-read chart. I think they even give a reasonable little interpretive reading of your horoscope as part of the package. You'll need to know your birth information -- day, month, year, time and geographical place. Without all that your chart will have limited accuracy.

Or, if you want to get serious and really talk about this, upvote this post and start a conversation in the comments section sometime in the next six days from the time of publication. We'll go from there depending on what you want to know.

Questions about any of this? -- Upvote this post and talk to me in comments. It's a terrific way to build value for yourself and the community ... and it will give me ideas of what to write about in future posts. Believe me there is lots to say about the way The Sun, The Moon -- and all the other elements in a horoscope, all the other components of Astrology -- work together to interpret you and your story -- and what it all means to the person you've become.
