Challenges in Modern Agriculture
◉ What are some of the biggest challenges faced by farmers today?
Current issues affecting agricultural producers are erratic climate and harsh weather conditions, water and arable land deficiencies, animal and plant diseases and pests, volatility of the global markets creating uncertainties in exports, high costs of implementing production using advanced machinery, quality seeds, and fertilizers, and most importantly scarcity of labor and increasing costs of operation.
And another complexity of managing such giant and competitive processing companies is that farmers suffer from and address regulatory hurdles, technology and innovation, sustainability, and relevancy to the ever-evolving consumer trends in the market so solving these problems needs a complex approach that will include efficiency of sustainable measures, meaningful initiatives and positive policy concerning to agricultural sector.
◉ How does climate change impact agricultural productivity?
Effects of climate change in agriculture are as follows Climate change impacts on agriculture and we define climate change as the alteration of the climate system over a long period of time and whatever the changes in temperature and precipitation mean for the crops that are planted, it will not work well for production, so weather conditions including drought, flood and heat stress reduces crop yield and attacks livestock.
And some pests and diseases that were restricted by climate can now extend to areas they have not previously been found and this poses a threat to crop production, also climate changes may also exert pressure on soil aggregation and water accessibility so othering agricultural production, and the need to adopt these changes through practicing sustainable agriculture, crop diversification as well as adopting new technologies in order agricultural productivity not be deterred by climate change affects cannot be over emphasized.
◉ What innovations or technologies are emerging to help farmers address these challenges?
According to the literature it reveals that farmers are progressively shifting to seeking solutions to problems arising from agriculture in expanding technologies, and other example of innovations are precision agriculture that involves input of a variety of technology such as sensors, GPS and data analysis to enhance productivity of crops and use of inputs in an efficient manner.
The primary benefits of drones and satellite imagery are to present an opportunity to review the overall condition of crops and the condition of diseases during the initial stage so mechanization and automation are modifying nature of work that includes planting, weeding, and even picking through enhancing production and reducing cost of hiring workers so in addition, the biotechnology is developing crops genetically and using gene editing tools to develop crops that can survive with pests, diseases and climate change.
