A Tuesday Movie in Afterlife Mythology

Tuesday is now apparently movie theater day. If you are in a place with an AMC movie theater they have a promotion where you can buy movie tickets for 5 USD each every Tuesday. All that is needed is signing up their free membership, and the tickets need to be bought at the box office itself. Maybe it's just the price anchoring talking, but that price is pretty much the lowest I've seen in my lifetime for these theaters. We used the same promotion last week for watching Coco.

What's nice is that they allow you to pick seats at the time of purchase. But don't be like me and pick seats in the very front by misreading their chart and assuming the top of the chart means the back of the theater. Thinking back, I recall doing this at least two other times. A recurring brain fart. We almost got away with sitting in a different seat but then the original occupants came late and we went to sit towards the front.

This time we went to see one called Along With the Gods: The Two Worlds.
It is a Korean film about a recently deceased soul undergoing trials in the afterlife for the chance of reincarnation. The entire living life is judged for various sins, and only those that are clear are granted reincarnation. They make very clear that this is a very rare occurence, and the majority of visitors are doomed to be punished in some form or other. Yes, very positive outlook on the afterlife, right?

I liked the aspects of mythology concerning the afterlife. Details such as the form of punishment for the violation of various sins. And some of the more creative touches such as having essentially what are public defenders with super-human abilities to defend you from demons.

Another interesting aspect of the movie is its exploration of how quickly tangled things get in terms of judgement. It's easy for the prosecutors to take snippets of your life out of context to paint you as a villain. Often the situation is much more nuanced, telling white lies or lies of omission in a bid to protect one another. Or just being victims of unfortunate timing.

If I was judged by my life today, I wonder what the demons would come up with. Actually I just asked my wife, and she said: "not living in the moment, or not living life to its fullest." D'oh... I'l need to work on that. Probably because recently I've just been thinking of Steem too much.

As far as my overall impressions? It was an enjoyable movie, but there were times I felt it was a bit sloppy. A very interesting concept to be sure, and at times quite touching. It was worth it.

I love these Indie films. Some of the best films I've seen have been from Korea, Japan, France, Spain (Vanilla Sky – so much better in the Spanish original). They know how to write a good screenplay and deliver it properly, seemingly without the Hollywood agenda which tends to go for sentiment over truth. Bah.

Afterlife: I'd like this film. It's intriguing how wild the imagination can be with what happens after it's over. So many people waste their lives on this rather than just being present in the moment.

Thanks. Our cinemas are rip-offs usually too, but there's a good independent one still in existence not far from me. They're staffed by volunteers who make a proper cuppa tea and don't overcharge for the popcorn.

The kind of stories they come up with is certainly out there and a fun ride.

Yeah, I think they overestimate the desire to have that giant screen and loud sounds vs the actual content.

Films nowadays: Truth. All glitter and no sparkle.

I found movies such as this very intriguing. I was always interested about the subjects of life and death. What happens when you die, and how were we created in the first place. I believe a lot of our history is "blacked" out and incorrect. But, that is just my opinion.

Thank you for the review. Will think about watching this movie next time I have my own movie night. Have a great day. :)

History being blacked out is true and unfortunate. If only we could communicate with past lives....

That would solve many problems of our world no doubt in my mind. This world is lead by people writing history as they see it. And, that is a very dangerous road to take. Unless they purposely want to mislead people. Which is what I think we see in the world today, unfortunately.

You have to love those recurring brain farts. Sometimes we, humans, can be so stupid we just want to wallbang.

I kinda love those moments when I realise... oh eff, not again!

It certainly keeps life interesting at my expense ha...

I've watched quite a lot of Kdramas and they're concepts are quite interesting. Sometimes going back from the past, aliens, ghosts and etc. Something different from American movies. ^^

who would wanna miss out on that thanks for sharing

Sounds like an interesting flick. Tryin' to live right :).
