The last days of Oscar Grant | #KarenTalks

This new week I bring another old-ish film, of a few years ago. I watched it recently because it is no other than the directorial debut of Ryan Coogler, who is claimed by many as one of the best directors of the moment.

Fruitvale Station is an American biographical drama film written and directed by Ryan Coogler. It centers around the last few days of 22-years-old Oscar Grant (Michael B. Jordan) and the events leading to his death, perpetrated in 2009 by BART police officer Johannes Mehserle at the Fruitvale district station of the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system in Oakland. This terrible case of police brutality sparked protests in the city.

The movie, although it finds its climax in the scene at the train station -that was recorded by many witnesses-, does not revolve around this very moment or the protest or criminal trial that follewed the death of Grant but around the last few days of his life and into telling the kind of man he was.

It has a very special indie vibe to it, not being very loudly clear with certain scenes and dialogues, instead leaving them open for you interpret but it still nails the job at being a sort-of documentary on Oscar Grant, who, although not perfect, was shown to be a nice man and loving father.
