Nightless Nights Are Here
I've lived almost 30 Finnish summers, yet every new summer, the bright nights surprise me and have me in awe. Technically, the sun does set for a few hours, but it only dibs below the horizon ever so slightly, so the sky doesn't get fully dark at all during the summer months.
Mid summer is still a little over a month from now, and until that, the nights just keep getting brighter and brighter. These I shot in the morning around 4am, just before sunrise. The time between sunset and sunrise is 6 hours as of now, but the twilights lasts so long that it really does not get fully dark during the night. At the latitude I live in, it will get down to 4 hours of night, and then it will start getting dark again. If you were to travel to northern Finland, for a couple weeks, the sun doesn't set fully at all, pretty insane, isn't it?
I need to start being up at night time again, after having a really good sleep schedule for months, I just can't keep missing the magical Finnish summer nights. Though it's not summer yet, like you might see from the pictures, there is frost on the ground because the temperature hovers around zero during the nights.
I was in Iceland a few years ago and remember the sun going down around 10 pm but the sky stayed a blueish til 2 am when the sun came back up..
..the weirdest part was eating at a restuarant. In Canada at 9 pm they dim the lights for that night ambiance.. but in Iceland there's no point since it still seems like day
That's definitely an amazing thing I want to experience someday <3 Makes for perfect photo ops as well! The sky is so pretty with bits of pink and blue :-)
There are soooo much more photo ops in the summer than during other seasons.
Can't believe these are pictures at 4am! You probably need thick thick thick curtains to sleep :o
Haha yeah if you can only sleep in the dark, you really need black-out curtains :D
Very interesting. It's similar to what is experienced in the US, Alaska. Great shots. It must be an interesting feeling to see light at night.
Would love to see a sun over the horizon line at midnight. We don't have night suns, but yesterday at midnight the temperature was 25 degrees. I feel like I'm in caribe! 😁

You live in a magical land up north.
I love how you refer to it as "I've lived almost 30 Finnish summers" LOL!
It’s amazing in summer, but the winter days are so short... Every perk has its downside. Enjoy those magical summer nights as much as you can!

These are beautiful photo's. I've got an uncle living near Bergen, Norway and I've visited both in winter and summer and the midsummer nights are incredible. I've also been to North of Finland in the summer when the sun actually doesn't go down. Amazing. Although I would be able to handle the dark winter days

Yes it does come with the drawback of the sun doing the exact opposite in the winter time, never coming up. It is very very depressing.
