Thank you so much for the great response to yesterday's post! I hope you are having a great time whatever you are up to.

Today I would like to talk to you about one of the most important historical monuments of Germany and maybe even Europe. I chose this because it is an example of how something dreadful turned into something beautiful. Those of you who did not have the chance to visit Germany and Berlin yet, should definitely do that. Apart from a great nightlife and low-living expenses it offers tons of historical lessons.

Separating a country

Not too long ago Germany was divided into two parts by a huge wall. Two be exact from 1961 until 1989, so that makes a total of 28 years. I don't wanna go too much into historical events but rather point out first that this issue is still very present in Berlin and second that greyness can become colorful. When I first came to Berlin I was very surprised that people here still identify themselves with the heritage of belonging to the old eastern part or the old western part of Germany. Whatever your political viewpoint maybe no one can deny that establishing this wall lead to much misery in many German families. People even died trying to pass the wall. So for many it is a symbol of a world that tried to rise by separation rather than by unification.

Make Art not War

Fast forward to today, there is still a small piece of the 160 kilometer long wall left right in the centre of Berlin, attracting many tourists each and every day. The remaining part is thought to serve as a memorial - in form of an open air art gallery called East Side Gallery - of that time and measures 1316 meters. At the time the actual border was the river Spree and this part of the wall was just behind it. What's so special about this gallery is that it was organized as the first united German #art proeject and artists from all over the world were invited to express their feelings, perspectives and attitudes towards this wall. Over the years the pieces had to be redone several times due to dilapidation.

So a symbol of separation turned into a colorful, peaceful and thoughtful piece of art.
