Here's something that's stuck with me the way you describe:
When I was in high school, we had the option to place a quote with our picture in the yearbook. There was an upperclassman I knew whose quote was, "Experience is the best teacher, but somebody else's experience is even better."
I think it was supposed to be a justification for slacking off (as many clever sayings in senior yearbooks).
But it always echoed a profound truth for me: that while the hardest parts of life occur when the test comes before the lesson, building on what other people have learned can keep that in a proper order.
This is really insightful, and as we hope to learn and practice it, many others do the exact opposite.
They love being the spectacle, the subject of the matter. Until thought by experience, they do not learn from the mistake or experience of others.
We should be cautious ourselves, so we would not fall victim of this pride.

When I was younger, I thought maybe I didn't understand something. But now that I'm older, I guess I've realized my own understanding was worth paying attention to!
