Mythology of Pandora Box

in #myth8 years ago

In Greek mythology, Pandora plays an important role in the story of Prometheus and his opposition to Zeus. Prometheus was a Titan, one of the sons of Titan Iapetus and the nymph of Clymene.

Depending on the version of the story, Prometheus along with his brother Epimetheus is both a human mentor and creator. At first it was told that the human race is all made up of men without a single woman. Prometheus is a human defender who helps against Zeus's dominance.

Prometheus's first act for humanity is to deceive Zeus to choose a low quality cow, a choice that is made once but lasts forever. In retaliation, Zeus withholds the knowledge of making fire from humans. Prometheus was unhappy with this decision and stole fire to be given to humans.

Prometheus stole the fire by hiding it in the fennel stalk while carrying it from the dwelling of the gods to the earth, or in another version, stealing it from the iron fusion of the god Hephaestus. Not stopping there, Prometheus began teaching humans how to do all sorts of things.

It was at this point that Pandora began to enter the story, with details given by Hesiod in his work "Works and Days". Seeing Prometheus's behavior, Zeus is so angry and plans revenge for destroying humanity. Zeus asked Hephaestus to create Pandora, the first woman, from clay.

Athena then revives Pandora, and other gods also add the attribute so that Pandora becomes a very interesting figure. Athena taught the ability of crafts, Hermes gave speech, and Aphrodite gave his blessing. This first woman was then called Pandora which means "all gifts."

Zeus then gave Pandora a kind of jar sealed with every crime and disease that can make people suffer. Knowing that Prometheus was too clever to be deceived, Zeus sent Pandora to Epimetheus. Although Prometheus had been warned not to accept the gift of Zeus, Epimetheus welcomed Pandora.

Because it may be triggered curiosity, Pandora then opened the jar. Eating out all the diseases, difficulties, and misery with the only thing left in the jar is hope. According to Hesiod, the moral of Pandora's story is that no one can block Zeus's will.
