1970 : Thor Heyerdahl's Ra II sails to Bridgetown, Barbados, as far as 5,260 km from its original point in Morocco

1945 : Physicist Robert Bacher, a member of the prominent Manhattan Project, assembles the first atomic bomb by hand at an old ranch house in Los Alamos, New Mexico, USA

1906 : After 12 years of trial and probation, Captain Alfred Dreyfus, an Alsatian Jew accused of treason, was found not guilty by a French court

1806 : Napoleon I establishes the Rhein Confederacy, the unification of the German state under French patronage intended to offset the influence of Austria and Prussia

1690 : On the banks of the Boyne River near Drogheda, in Ireland, the Roman Catholic king James II of England, previously overthrown, was defeated by Protestant army of his successor, William III, in the Battle of Boyne
