Shenzhen, China... Where 90% of Your Electronics Come From

WIRED put together this incredible documentary about "The Silicon Valley" of Hardware, found in Shenzhen, China. Shenzhen is China's "innovation center", and connects China's mainland with Hong Kong.

In just 40 years, Shenzhen has transformed from a fishing village full of rice paddies, to the electronic-manufacturing center of the world. It is estimated that 90% of electronics today come from here. Hardware prototyping and "copycat manufacturing", which is illegal and highly regulated in the West, is not restricted here. The legal landscape, as well as tens of thousands of electronics manufacturers being in close proximity to each other has created a booming ecosystem for Shenzhen to thrive in.

As a perfect example, people are mashing up Android and Apple products. You can get virtually any piece of hardware you want in Shenzhen, in quantities of 1 or 2, all the way up to a million plus. None of this has to happen behind closed doors or on the black market - it is out in the open and the possibilities are limitless.

Whereas in the West, it may take a year or even several years to develop a new product, in Shenzhen, it takes a 2-3 months. This niche market is not possible here in the West because of the legal obstacles.

I was utterly bewildered when I learned about Shenzhen.
