Luke 6 17, 20-26: Jesus Teaches, Preaches, and Heals!
17 Jesus and his apostles went down from the mountain and came to some flat, level ground. Many other disciples were there to meet him. Large crowds of people from all over Judea, Jerusalem, and the coastal cities of Tyre and Sidon were there too. 20 Jesus looked at his disciples and said: God will bless you people who are poor. His kingdom belongs to you! 21 God will bless you hungry people. You will have plenty to eat! God will bless you people who are crying. You will laugh 22 God will bless you when others hate you and won’t have anything to do with you. God will bless you when people insult you and say cruel things about you, all because you are a follower of the Son of Man. 23 Long ago your own people did these same things to the prophets. So when this happens to you, be happy and jump for joy! You will have a great reward in heaven. 24 But you rich people are in for trouble. You have already had an easy life! 25 You well-fed people are in for trouble. You will go hungry! You people who are laughing now are in for trouble. You are going to cry and weep! 26 You are in for trouble when everyone says good things about you. That is what your own people said about those prophets who told lies.

Dear friends
Here the Evangelist Luke details one aspect of Jesus' preaching "He went down with them, and stood in a flat place." This is contrasted with the Gospel of Matthew, which puts Jesus preaching his sermon on a mountain (Matthew 5). The evangelist Luke is very sensitive to the marginalized and poor, this is his way of emphasizing the ministry of Jesus among the people of the town and in the places where they spend their lives.
Jesus shows us that to be happy, it is better to give than to receive, it is better to serve than to dominate, share than hoard, forgive that revenge, create life that explode.
Thus, the human being finds his satisfaction when he assumes his deep condition, which consists in being brothers, we find our fulfillment and, therefore, our most intimate satisfaction when we follow the example of the Lord.
The satisfactions and pleasures, social prestige can become dehumanizing traps, because they break the fraternity and install us in this life, preventing us from getting closer to God.
Thus we must be useful, serve, help and give joy to others. We must follow the example of Jesus, be merciful, understanding, peaceful, open, free, be a good friend. This has been understood by wise men and has achieved happiness and inner joy.
The Beatitudes of Luke must be read in contrast to the misfortunes: the rich man is unfortunate whose wealth is causing the poor. It is unfortunate the bounty of those who live in abundance and are the occasion of the hunger of many. It is cursed the laughter that is the cause of the weeping of those who lack everything.
The Gospel of Luke is a great criticism of society, which is governed by power structures that generate poor people. Today we know that more than one thousand five hundred million people live on less than a dollar a day.
It is possible to interpret the four misfortunes of Lucas in positive key:
- Blessed are the rich, in money or power, in talent or time, who put it at the service of the poor and needy.
- Blessed are the rich who are willing to continue naked to the naked Christ of Calvary.
- Blessed are those who are filled, because they have the strength to help the hungry.
- Blessed are those who feel uncomfortable when they see information about hunger in the world.
- Blessed if you experience your emptiness and the need to fill the heart of God and the values that are worthwhile. Happy those who laugh, if you can bring joy to others.

Lord God, you sent us to listen to your beloved Son, grant us to nourish ourselves intimately with your word, so that once our inner look is purified, we rejoice in the contemplation of your Glory. For our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen
