Psalm 78: 1-4
1 Give ear, O my people, to my law: incline your ears to the words of my mouth.
2 I will open my mouth in a parable: I will utter dark sayings of old:
3 Which we have heard and known, and our fathers have told us.
4 We will not hide them from their children, shewing to the generation to come the praises of the Lord, and his strength, and his wonderful works that he hath done.

Dear friends

The Psalmist in Psalm 78 emphasizes the believer in the people of God, so that he may attend to his teaching and listen to it with attention. It is a Psalm of wisdom, written to instruct. The theme is the goodness and mercy of God towards His stubborn and rebellious people.

This Psalm is the longest of the historical ones. It relates the great deeds of God in the history of Israel. Here the psalmist begins with common language in sapiential writings, wants to teach his recipients; and he does so considering the disobediences of the people and remembering the great wonders that God has done. Thus the psalmist contrasts the ingratitude and infidelity of Israel with the faithfulness and mercy of God.

The Psalm helps us think again about all that God has done for our church, in our family and in our lives. It helps us to examine our attitudes, what things make us turn away from God or get closer. It always highlights the patience and mercy of God and this leads us to increase faith. We also have to learn from the history of Israel and our own history in order to follow with greater certainty the path that our Lord Jesus Christ teaches us. John 11: 25-26.

Lord God, that through the humiliation of your Son you rebuilt the fallen world, grant your faithful a holy joy so that those whom you rescued from the bondage of sin, let us enjoy the joy that has no end. For our Lord Jesus Christ, Amen.
