To Honor Old Masters - Herbert James Draper

Herbert James Draper ( 1863 - 1920 ) was an English painter of the Victorian era.

After the education at the Royal Academy of Arts, he undertook in the years 1888 to 1892 several study trips to Paris and Rome. In the 1890s he also worked as a book illustrator.

In 1894, Draper's main creative period began. At this time he mainly painted themes from Greek mythology in large format. His painting The Lament for Icarus was awarded in 1900 at the Paris World Fair with the gold medal and was later bought by the Sir Chantrey Trustees for the Tate Gallery.

Although Draper was never a member of the Royal Academy, he was involved from 1887 until shortly before his death at the local exhibitions every year.

In later years when the mythological scenes became less popular, he concentrated more on portraits. During his lifetime, Draper enjoyed a good reputation as a sophisticated portrait painter.
